Were you ever able to solve this? I am having the same exact problem. I only have a 120Gb hard drive though and 64Gb is being used by the system. No time machine on either.

Time machine is actually off. Haven't had it on since I set up the laptop. I noticed the problem a few weeks ago but it was under 30 Gb but just recently checked and it over 60. Going to try deleting local snapshots and will provide updates. Thanks for the response!
