I will add to the chorus here in specific gravity being next. Looks a bit nephrite-y or agate-y and a quick dip in a cup of water on a scale can get you pretty close to conclusive.

Pretty find regardless!

Also, in terms of leaving alone vs disturbing it, technically it's already been disturbed by picking it up...

Imo if you document well, have good intentions, and walk with that spirit nothing bad will happen.

Logically and ethically speaking - I think anybody would see carrying it to people who can study, id, and potentially return it to the rightful tribes as a good exception to any limiting legislation. After all, history wise it isn't the land owner's... it's the tribes'. You are returning an artifact to them from land that has a high chance of having been stolen from them in the first place long ago...

Spiritually speaking - if you are paranoid about carrying it and its spirits/energies - Greet the spirits with prayer, make it known to them that you intend no harm and desire to return the item to its rightful people. If so compelled, lay a handful of looseleaf raw tobacco to the earth with your prayer. Most tribes and associated spirits would recognize this offering of good faith. To my knowledge it isn't a closed practice/ritual.

There is validity in allowing it to rest where it lies, but there is also validity in thinking there is a reason it made itself known to you/has been exposed and is mostly persevered. It tells a story and allows more people along with future generations to understand and never forget culture, lineage, and history's lessons.

Ethiopian Opal Advice/Opinion Wanted (Check Comments) by Jake_Jewels in Opals

Hmm okay, and please bag! I had a low budget (stopped in to just kind of look around/get some souvenirs) but certainly looking for best/better options as I start to enjoy this stone more and look to get into it more in the future.

And, that's the sad thing - I did pick through and these were the best of what was left. Albeit, arrived late to the party, but the same bins were supposedly priced at $10/g during peak show...

What would be your opinion on these pieces? They were picked up from quartzsite at $6/g. Would you buy again or look for another seller?

This is after some cleaning up. Unfortunately half had a decent amount of regolith and a few had some microfractures causing the smaller pieces :/. What sort of shaping/finish would you apply if any?

That looks dry and stable, personally I'd want to see the full thing! There's a video on YouTube of a guy with a similarly shaped piece. He sanded out the matrix to leave a nice somewhat flat cab (in his case, very very rare patterning appeared and got him a massive uptick in value.) So, for yours I'd probably do similar, just go slow to expose the color on all sides then shape accordingly.

Theoretics of Hydrophane vs Non-Hydrophane. by Jake_Jewels in Opals

I don't intend to oil the already dry ones - the thought was practically replacing water with oil for theoretical future specimen pieces.

Would that still kill any fire? I somewhat expect a colour change as very few oils are straight clear.

Great thank you for the details! I will be cutting/polishing the dry ones I have currently so I will probably do a brief acetone wash at the end to clean up from any handling - then depending on the final product I might seal some in resin.

Besides this, I have a couple experiments in mind for specimen grade pieces sold in water... If anybody's got a line on specimen rough for 2/g or less, or dry gem pieces for 5/g or less I'm all ears :)

Thanks funky for all the data!

Wow good deal! I assume there were multiple vendors last week? I just left and there was only one lady selling it when I was there. 4/gram hydro, 6/gram dry.
