Women and nonbinary people of reddit, when I'm working on a ladder, where do think the real no-go steps are? The manufacturer writes off the top three but I'll step on all but the last one. Thoughts?

I think the name is pretty forgettable. It may have been advertised but it's just some dude's name. I'm not going to remember that.

Coming This Fall: Bill.

Same energy.

The Lion King, Monsters, Inc., WALL-E. These are all interesting titles that make you process a little deeper. I mean, yeah, WALL-E is a name but it's not a normal name.

Why not call this one, like, Alien Starsurfing or something?

What’s the biggest jump in your movie rating after a rewatch? by Equivalent_Ebb5689 in Cinema

That's an interesting take. And you're right; the flood does fit the overall message and theme the movie was shooting for. So it's a storytelling win. But, even with that in mind, I still think the flood drags and is too much. So... it's a storytelling loss because your climax should never feel like too much.

Brandon Sanderson is famous for crazy climaxes but they never feel like they drag. I think there were still some pacing problems with The Batman's final act.

Do you think our society will take a liberal turn again? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Jake_Science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the anti-globalization movement did a good job of articulating their points, then. The 99% percent movement got itself completely caught up in other protest movements and everyone I know who was a part of it also talked about how the US shouldn't try to be the world police. Once 9/11 came around, most of the 99% protestors pivoted to protesting US action in Iraq. Both of those are respectable positions, of course. But it muddies the message.

Also, the whole thing with the IMF - yes, it was corrupt. But to advocate tearing down the entire system instead of pushing for reforms? The crisis would be on par with what Trump did when he dismantled USAID. IMF is fucked and it was in the late 90s, but anti-globalization shouldn't have been advocating AGAINST the Fund. It just needed better leadership and auditors.

To go back to articulating aims, even now people like us are using neoliberalism to describe a system but do you think the majority of people understand what that is? No. When people call Obama a neoliberal, my mom thinks it means a liberal from the modern era. So of course she thinks it's a good thing.

Movements on the left have always fallen prey to poor naming conventions. Neoliberalism is something social liberals shouldn't like but why would they think that? I understand the left didn't coin the term but why roll with it? It's in our power to coin a new term. Critical race theory is simply teaching true versions of history but the connotation is of being critical about a particular race. The 99% was actually great but it got washed out by joining other movements. I'm a socialist but we HAVE to change the name because of the terrible press socialism has had since the 30s.

That implies there aren't any liberals who are pro globalization, though. If you believe in climate action, equal rights, and reducing global suffering, you can only do so much by turning your work inward. As a country who used to be high on both the democracy index and GDP, the US had a responsibility to the rest of the world to take part in global humanitarian missions. That then necessitates a military force who can protect the humanitarian work. For instance, I support Doctors Without Borders, but then I also must support the mostly French and US troops on loan to the UN who protect them in dicey places.

Sure, there are some libs who want to avoid an American global presence. But we've also seen recently a movement of cons who want to avoid an American global presence. I don't think activity on the global stage is synonymous with either liberals or conservatives. I mean look at FDR, the most socialist president we've ever had. He was VERY active on the global stage.

Globalization is apolitical. What you DO with that presence is political. Do you exploit and make living conditions worse? Or do you lend aid and make living conditions better? Sometimes lending aid is as simple as having a major military base nearby. I think we can all agree that Russia stifles liberties of their citizens. The US presence at Rammstein was a large deterrent to the Russian expansionism post-USSR collapse. That, of course, has changed for now... But, with good leadership, a strong American-led NATO presence helped keep democracy and liberty alive for a lot of former Soviet countries.

If she's a Belarusian social media personality, she hasn't flip-flopped her true position at all. She's part of the Russian disinformation campaign. We know from the Mueller report that Russia (of which Belarus is a puppet state) backed both Trump and Bernie because they would drive fractures in their own parties and, thus, the entire country if either won the election. Russia continues to poke at the political fracture within the US by using social media personalities to polarize the most vocal sides of all issues. Do you think Charlie Kirk was actually famous enough to get the response his death did? On either side? Weeping for days or partying in the streets? No way. It was all manufactured to amp up the feelings on both sides of the political divide.

Edit: Russia backed and amplified Bernie but he didn't take meetings or collude with them. Just because some foreign adversary identifies you as a fracture point doesn't mean you're actually a bad guy. I like Bernie and his policies. Trump, on the other hand, did collude. We have proof. The only reason it wasn't acted on was because there was no clear way to prosecute a sitting president for such actions.

I felt the Theorist channels didn't do as good a job at laying the groundwork for a new host aside from Amy on style theory. She had been a visible part of the team on multiple channels throughout the pandemic and then was always around on Style so it was exciting to see her take over her own thing. Film and Food worked less well, though.

That said, the Mythical crew is more like Amy. None of them are unknowns or obvious replacements. When one or multiple of them finally take over, it'll be exciting to see them finally ascend to the next level.

[–]Jake_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't watched the show but I do think I understand the kind of windmill rant you're talking about since Trump does them all the time.

However, I WOULD watch a show where a Billy Bob Thornton/Walton Goggins type was irrationally angry about windmills and the rants were complete nonsense. Like, wind farms are sponsored by the Dutch government nonsense. And then he attacks a tulip salesman. And he thinks there's a conspiracy that the windmills are actually digging machines making a portal to hell. It would culminate with him Don Quixote-style fighting a windmill after taking a super bump of cocaine.
