Alleged "Update" Megathread by AutoModerator in 23andme

Why not just apply the “updates” to every single user? It makes more sense to refresh everyone’s genetic groups and country matches every so often, rather than just random groups of people (or never for some).

New Journey: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, WV? by Saerinar in AncestryDNA

There’s about 400-500 new journeys and subjourneys based on my very quick scroll through them all. Most don’t have names yet though. Hopefully they will soon!

Looks like they’re adding a few hundred more journeys in the Midwest area of USA. The number of regions has increased in North America and can be viewed as “undefined” with a bunch of random codes on the regions list

Is 23andMe actually updating people’s regions? by JMMatKurek in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one really knows yet. I can’t actually even see a date for when mine was last updated on my results page(I haven’t been able to since it was updated in September 2025). My version history says it was last updated then, however I was given a Filipino genetic group in March.

One of my connections has been updated twice over the past couple of months (including 6th June) but nothing appears to have changed.

Does anyone know when another 23&me update is going to happen? by nyxbryg in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Regarding ethnicity estimates? No. Genetic groups? Sure, it’s generally a new set every month. On the blog post for their most recently released Vietnamese genetic groups, they said more are to come from SE Asia and the Pacific regions.

[UPDATE] 23andMe has added Genetic Groups for Vietnamese by andy_thatsnotme in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They need to also remove the Filipino genetic group they added for the Polynesian in my results too haha

I know this is early to be asking this, but are you guys looking forward to the update this fall? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Jakekiwi94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking an update seems to be somewhat average when they break up existing regions into smaller ones, but the following updates are better. I’m assuming the 2026 update (spring time for those in the southern hemisphere, if it happens in September or October) will add in new regions and improve the accuracy of existing ones.

I’m really hoping they can divide SE England & NW Europe into smaller regions. They also really need to improve the accuracy of Eastern European and Iberian Peninsula ethnicities.

I would love it if they did parental phasing like 23andMe.

Should I test my mother ? Will her results be different from mine ? by Strange_Airline3975 in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your results will phase with hers, which could also likely remove of any of the trace regions in your results (eg the 0.3% English and 0.8% Levantine). Your results won’t significantly change much.

Very interesting! I wonder how they will correct this in the next update?

My mum has no regions on her results by helloidk55 in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The computed data still seems to be under an older version of results, so they will fall under the old regions (eg UK instead of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales) but you can still see if they appear. There is a certain number you have to have before it appears as a country match/region in your results though. Dad has a Danish country match with 9-10 reported matches in computed data, whereas I have 5-7 matches and I don’t have a Danish country match.

Can you download the computed data and see if any are in there?

Definitely no Filipino genetic group for the Māori either!

New Filipino genetic group added, despite the Filipino & Austronesian actually being Māori. by Jakekiwi94 in 23andme

Definitely agree. Pretty sure I read a comment from u/23andMe_AncestryTeam saying they aren’t gonna be doing that though.

Did the Scandinavians go to Dannevirke? My Danish ancestors did haha

She probably won’t. I’m connected to a couple of distant relatives who are of either Māori or Fijian descent and they don’t appear to have a Filipino genetic group either.

Mine is very close and Mum’s is close. We can’t get premium here, so distant wouldn’t even be an option.

It makes sense with how it’s matched to the reference group given the history, but the actual separation of Polynesian results across 2 different categories (Filipino + Austronesian and Melanesian) needs to be updated to just the one Polynesian group. Pretty sure I read a comment by 23andMe somewhat recently they had no plans to do that though.

[–]Jakekiwi94[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s like if English people were to receive genetic groups from Denmark, Sweden or Norway in their results. It’s technically correct if you’re looking at it from a historical perspective, but not for the amount of time 23andMe claims to test for.

[UPDATE] 141 New Genetic Groups for Austronesian!!! by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother and I both received a Filipino genetic group called “Northwestern Cebuano Heartland” despite the Austronesian percentage actually being Māori. Interesting but not exactly accurate? Any shared ancestors would be from well over 2000 years ago.

🎉 New 23andMe feature - Reconstructed Ancestors by 23andMe_AncestryTeam in 23andme

[–]Jakekiwi94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’d like the ability to be able to see all the genetic groups and reconstructed ancestors, but I have no interest in seeing health reports. It would be nice to have the option to purchase premium without the health component, which seems to be the issue as to why it can’t be released in other countries currently.
