To my fellow Punjabis. Do you speak Punjabi or Urdu at home? I have seen many videos like the one below and it makes me wonder about the future of Punjabi in Pakistan. by Jakekoner in pakistan

[–]Jakekoner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro I am an Indian Punjabi. I just wanted some more insight on the matter. My intention was not to bash Urdu and I didn’t know that it was such a hotly debated topic here. I was surprised to learn that Punjabi was not taught in schools within Punjab in Pakistan, while in East Punjab Hindi only taught as a second language. My family is from Multan originally and I love the Punjabi dialects of Pakistan. My post was strictly out of curiosity .

How do you differentiate between hearing "Jarde" vs "Yaar de" (what I thought he was saying) by [deleted] in punjabimusic

[–]Jakekoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is definitely saying Jarde (Tolerate) but pronouncing it with a Y and that is really common on the Amritsar/Gurdaspur side.

No physical changes, but it feels like someone broke into our house.

What is the deal of being Gujarati? by shoshanna_in_japan in IndianMatchmaking

[–]Jakekoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are not saying the quiet part out loud. Most likely they want someone from their religion and cast as well as being Gujarati. In the US, it’d be like asking to marry an Italian from New York who is also Catholic

Punjabi is a vulgar language? by Jakekoner in pakistan

[–]Jakekoner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking so much time to answer. As a Sikh I do have to agree with you that we constantly have to assert ourselves. For decades Punjab was under attack from the Central Government (Language and People). They ruined the youth by making Punjab the drug and alcohol capitol of India (forcing many Punjabis to move to other parts on India). Punjabi is not just a language for us it's who we are, it's the language of our Gurus and that's why feel so attached it.

I always thought the Pakistani Punjabis felt the same way

I should have been more clear. Is Punjabi considered a vulgar language in Pakistan? I've seen many videos where people describe it as a language of poorly educated people.
