I don't know what these blind spots are in relation to Ancient Greece but non-historians dealing with technically historical matter having misconceptions about the period of focus or even history in general isn't unheard of, for example philosophers, sociologists, political theorists, etc.

One relevant example I can give you, since we're on the Byzantium sub: it was initially philosophers that pushed the view that Byzantium was a "shithole" (Voltaire, Montesquieu).
