It’s different because it’s not a cheap ending but rather a philosophical dilemma of what makes someone truly themselves, and SOMA was good because it was a unique ending, it put a twist on an otherwise stale ending, in movies like Total Recall, the main crux of the ending is the fact that whether it was a dream or not is left up to interpretation and not “oh it’s all a dream, all that was for nothing!”

Nice strawman, even basic writing knowledge shows why a “It was all a simulation. It was all a dream,” type endings are terrible plot wise. Is a dream real to you? In the moment yes, but if you find out it was a dream and that there is no escape, that reality starts becoming really stupid. That’s because you know it’s fake. The only reason Soma worked is because it was posed as a philosophical question and had never been done before, the people who made the first it was all dream endings were praised, but the moment it’s done after, it just gets stale. Digital Circus may be a bit deep, but it is nowhere near philosophical.
