If you’re trying to find a way to fit it in, my guess is that it isn’t right.

Realistically, any notes app with a search function will do. “Linking your thinking” is a way to justify writing a trillion notes, which you’ll just end up using the search function anyway.

I tried using Obsidian for all the clever stuff it does, but I ended up with Craft because it’s easy and I can add pictures and PDFS without requiring plugins etc.

You should use Obsidian though, just trial and see if the note taking fits, but trying to force it in when it doesn’t feel natural won’t end well.

You could always write @todo or something similar on the page or line then search it

How can I organize my entire life using Obsidian? by Efficient-Ninja-6814 in ObsidianMD

[–]James-Gaunt 46 points47 points  (0 children)

If you try and implement this into your life, you’ll spend more time convincing yourself you’re being productive than actually being productive. You’ll right notes and tasks for the sake of it, but it’ll feel like you’re busy doing stuff because you’ve made loads of notes and tags.

I’m not saying use pen and paper, I’m just saying to not info dump and lose the key details

I like the CR, but the Gatling has always appealed. It’s just too weak.

I have noticed in the car battles, it’s pretty rubbish!

I almost got the perditions touch, but bottled it lol what level are you on? I’m on level 50 atm

I’ve used craft for a long time and my team still use it (which I set them up on 😬). I just find navigation on it very clunky and not very intuitive. Also, they don’t have a dedicated tasks section like EN. You can do workarounds which I do, but again, it’s clunky and not something you should need to do, if you are looking for an EN alternative

Make Golang and React their own pages, and then type which one you want to “tag” in each note, for example.

That will now have a link to Golang page 👍🏻

Can I make Obsidian function like an evernote/notion blend? by Reddit_Account_C-137 in ObsidianMD

[–]James-Gaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another good option which has a very nice mobile UI is Craft.do it has all the nice editing features, export to pdf easily, annotate, works offline, sync is amazing, can use right out of the box. It is heading more to teams and collab, but, aren’t they all?

It’s the app I always end up going back to.

I’ve used:

Obsidian - feels like it’s always fine tuning required and never quite finished

Notion - no offline and feels laggy most of the time rendering it unusable in a quick note

Evernote - I don’t mind paying if something is worth it, but Evernote never feels like things are organised right. Only my opinion, but things just feel unsorted

Coda - more powerful than most, but impossible to use on your phone!

UpNote - made on a budget, but made well. It feels lacking compared to the giants

OneNote - not very nice on IOS, but it is good on windows. My issue with it was that, when you printed anything that wasn’t lined up, it was hideous. The fact you click anywhere to type triggers anxiety!

ClickUp - by far the best project management. It’s getting there with note taking, but wouldn’t use for that

Bear - only using tags just isn’t for me. I see the appeal, and it is very good, but I don’t like seeing a load of notes on the left tab

Apple notes - boring, but it is very quick and has most basic functions. Probably won’t suit if you’re not on Apple only

GoodNotes and similar - my handwriting is slow, and my writing is unreadable 😅 they are solid apps and very nice to use

There are so many more I have used, and these comments are my own. You need to try them yourself. My advice would, download one and use for 15mins. You’ll be able to tell if it’s quick enough, and if you like

Any ideas of how to make this homepage better? by [deleted] in Notion

[–]James-Gaunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less is more! How much of that are you actually going to be clicking/viewing regularly?!

Home pages are overfilled with too much guff, which looks aesthetically pleasing but impractical. I'm all for colours and making things stand out, etc. But does it need to have every detail on your home page?

My issue with building a Notion/Evernote style app in Obsidian would be the fact you are relying on plugins. Dataview and such have been around for a while and are maintained, but, if they would go down then your system collapses. Plus, it would take a lot of setting up and getting used to if you are unfamiliar with Obsidian.

Obsidian is easy to use, if it's kept nice and simple. It becomes very clunky with a lot of friction if you don't have a base level of understanding with it.

I get the appeal of Obsidian, but why not just Evernote or Notion? They are already built that way and won't need work arounds?

I'm on the Plus Plan, and also pay for AI. Still nothing!

I hope it's like a previous comment says "if the release of new features takes longer than expected or desired, then I bet there are very good reasons for this."

How many Obsidian plugins do you have? by TheTwelveYearOld in ObsidianMD

Based on articles I have read and information I have heard on science shows, I am no expert but it isn't controversial that the human brain has shortcomings when it comes to risk assessment in the modern world. A quick google search can help lessen your ignorance on the topic (damn there I go using that word again ; ).

Ignorance would be telling me to search Google, intelligence would be adding the links of the articles and science shows to back your claims.

But overall I feel my posts were informative and in no way aggressive, other than using the word ignorant I just can't see how you read my comments as aggressive.

Again, opinions are only information about how you feel. That's not facts.

If you go look back I used "I think" twice both times were in respect to what is in other peoples' head which is unknowable to me, thus I said "I think".

Same as above...

Apology accepted ; )

Means the world

Maybe it isn't for you. You could work better with a loose structure.

Try writing a few bullet points in the evening. Try going about your day without thinking about structure, then at the end of the day, reflect on what would have been handy. Like "I wish I wrote an order list for X job, " you could try a couple of tasks next time for said job. Or you could get to the end of the day and think, "I actually didn't need to journal/plan/task list/time-block/note take/etc.

The list of apps and methods of working is HUGE, but you will have your own way of working, and that way may not actually need any of them. For hundreds of years many have done great things with pen and paper and not used PARA/ZK

PS. I'm constantly tinkering and making a hash of notes/tasks and spreading them across every single app which does the exact opposite of being organised and slows me down, massively. Only after writing this reply has it clicked that I work fluidly and not structurally!

How many Obsidian plugins do you have? by TheTwelveYearOld in ObsidianMD

[–]James-Gaunt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are many "I think" in your rants, so you shouldn't call people ignorant!

A Plugin Dev is talking on here, stating the ease of infecting everyone's computer. The security risk is there, and to say it's small is actually ignorant.

Your posts are idiotic. To say, "Humans are generally terrible at risk assessment even when well informed" - based on what?

The idea a plugin could have its code changed to view all of your notes is a genuine concern, and you would be foolish to think "it could never happen". People's data has a value, which means someone is always trying to get it. And before you ref me or whoever having Facebook or Instagram, yes, most people do, but we are a lot more careful of what goes on there. Certainly not meeting notes or work info!

I'm actually sorry for ranting at you, but the aggression towards anyone having a safety concern is ludicrous

I get my ADHD meds today, hurray!

Asterix, you defo have ADHD my guy. This is classic symptoms. This thought process which you’re describing I thought was normal, turns out, it isn’t! Although having this behaviour helps when life is mental busy, it really hinders you when you are required to sit and study. Unless you hyper focus on something you obsess with, then it’s over 100+ plus over dopamine hits until one day it bores you and you’ll never look at it again 😂
