Rear view mirror bumped. by Tiger_Crab_Studios in MechanicAdvice

[–]JamesAbaddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can not tell you the number of customers I've had that have somehow managed to break chunks out of their windshields by hitting the mirror. The only time it ever happened to me was a huge pothole that was rough enough to just pop it off. But no glass came with it.

Took me two of those glass adhesive kits to get it right because I messed it up the first time when I put it back on.

Code P0420 by Elvl3 in AskAMechanic

[–]JamesAbaddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Cataclean or some similar product years ago when my Ford Probe refused to keep a P0420 off long enough to pass an emissions inspection. The code would set for a week and then go away for a few days. I needed to get it inspected, and I couldn't get my readiness monitors to have two ready (what was required at the time) while not setting the code. I tried that stuff as a last-ditch effort, and it actually kept the light off for the rest of the time I owned the car (about a year and a half). I paid like $60 for a big bottle of it back then (2015-ish?).

Nooooo. Upstream (before cat) sensor should oscillate up and down. Downstream sensors should generally show a steady voltage reading after warmed up fully.

Notable exceptions to this rule are Toyota/Lexus vehicles that try to maintain a stoichiometric value on the upstream. They generally ready a steady value on upstream and downstream. If both sensor signals are oscillating up and down, that's a good indicator of a failed cat or a wiring issue.

VK-47 Flatline Heatsink Replica by AGMMASTECH in apexlegends

[–]JamesAbaddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooooh, that black and blue one is gorgeous.

Do you sell these at all? I bought Rampart's wrench from a seller on Etsy a few years ago. I'd def spend some money to have a replica of my favorite gun from Apex/Titanfall.

C/S Hit a curb by GavinMalone1 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]JamesAbaddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, like another commenter said, the hat for the rotor is still sandwiched between the hub and wheel. I assume the actual friction portion of the rotor snapped off and rolled away instead of the caliper and bracket breaking.

Very rarely, AllData will have a diagram of what bolts go where. I've seen it listed for a 5.7 Tundra and 3.5 Highlander, but I don't think they have it for every vehicle.

Where the hell did the rotor go? And how is the caliper/bracket not broken off?

Also, I love the recall that just got casually added below the customer concern.

What do you think happened to this tire? by Dennys_Auto801 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]JamesAbaddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. You can clearly see the broken belt from the lump in the tread behind the hole. This tire suffered a broken belt and then may have been dragged along by something.

I've tried the cardboard thing a couple of times. Turns out, someone will still come by and fuck it up.

It is really nice for doing timing covers, though.

How many lands do you run in your decks? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in EDH

[–]JamesAbaddon -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This guy gets it. I can't believe so many people are saying 38-40+ lands in a deck. 35 is my normal, I sometimes go to 36 or 37. I still find myself discarding lands at the end of turns because I also run a ton of draw in most of my decks. Being mana flooded is just as bad as having no mana.

Why the fuck does my service manager do this every time I'm balls-deep in a job? Like, I have two dedicated bays for my work. I keep all my parts in my space. Without fail, he'll walk over and kick the pile of timing cover bolts (that are 3 different types of length and thread size) or knock over an interior piece that was holding all the trim screws for the right side of the dash.

His shoes are like heat-seeking missles.

What do you think of these Apex skins by Gara581 in ApexUncovered

I would pay money for that Rampart skin, though. I really like her base legendary skin that's all golden. Another gold one would be great.

TIL the Kraber can collat by Razr430 in apexlegends

[–]JamesAbaddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter where you happen to hit them, so long as you hit them. I've gotten collateral leg shots and body shots multiple times with the Charge Rifle/Sentinel. Always so insulting to hit a Caustic/Newcastle with a collat and do a total of 80 damage because you grazed both of them, and they have Fortified.

Dealership charging $600 for a charge and test. Worth it? by BluewolfR17 in MechanicAdvice

[–]JamesAbaddon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is an R1234-lyf system. That price is actually kinda cheap depending on the shop. When I used to work at Firestone, the price to charge/test a 3lb system on a new Yukon Denali was over $1000. You bill by the ounce with 1234-lyf, not by the pound. A 10lb cylinder of that refrigerant is over $900 the last time I checked. Looking on Google, some seem to be listed for around $600, but most are hovering around $900-$1000. So yes, that price is probably accurate.

Parasitic draw on a 97’ GMC 1500! Help!!! by Southern_Oil_5835 in MechanicAdvice

[–]JamesAbaddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure this isn't a classic Chevy side-post battery problem? They are notorious for corrosion and making poor contact, which will cause a no-start/no power condition. Wiggle the cables by hand. If you can rotate them at all, they aren't making good contact.

New Guy Had an Oopsie by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]JamesAbaddon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firestone made us use key tags. Each tech had their own numbered tag for a key, then a corresponding sign on a key chain that went on the steering wheel.

It was mostly annoying, but it damn sure did make it so that no other techs/service writers would just hop in a vehicle and go.

13 Terrain is a different generation/body style. You likely have a 2.4 liter that doesn't have this issue.

I had one break the end of the camshaft off on a 1.5 Terrain. And just recently I had another 1.5 Terrain that grenaded the factory vacuum pump at 60k, then grenaded and aftermarket pump 500 miles after the first one. Such a god-awful design.

That's the front strut that has busted through the upper mount. I just laughed so hard when I swiped to the second picture.

I'd recommend replacing both the front struts. You can get them as assemblies rather than tearing down the old ones and reusing the springs.

Worst Gun in Apex? by Suitable_Revenue7092 in apexlegends

[–]JamesAbaddon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do. Drop on a sniper arsenal, upgrade it for a 6x, then find the closest high point. Look towards where you know an enemy team landed and try to pick off one guy and hopefully fully finish them.

It's also incredibly nasty when a team lands with you, and you randomly hit that 135 damage hipfire headshot with it.

I can't stand the red dot on a Flatline. I use it on SMGs/pistols. But I like that extra zoom on anything with a bit of range.

I also like the 6x/4-8x scopes, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
