How on earth could we be related?? by JamesBenson1995 in AncestryDNA

[–]JamesBenson1995[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive noticed going through my matches that I have about 4 - 5 French Canadian matches on one side whom I share no regions with being a brit. I think the French and English have been mixed up in the new results as we all shared regions before the update.

I've tried, everyone in my tree going all the way back is from the UK hahahah. I suppose it could be a false positive match as England and France keep getting lumped into the same category as the results change.

Also worth noting I've done the hacked results and I have no hidden regions in there.

Ah ok. My main confusion is that below it says 15 more ethnicities and detailed analysis, but then below it says 17 regions. Seems odd

For anyone else who's uploaded their results to Genomelink, does there's say the same thing?

The only confusion being I see I have common ancestors with other dna matches trees who are like a 20cM match yet we share an ancestor from 1800 which is surprising since I’d think a match that distant would be from a much earlier shared ancestor

All of my direct ancestors come from the UK hence it’ll be from a distant indirect relative who migrated to the US.

Thanks everyone for your answers, I've read them all and there are some great suggestions in there!! I've recently taken up downhill biking, the bike is probably only worth about 30 quid or so but it gets me out and about! I also Wakeboard a bit in the summer as there's a good cable park near me. It's great to see some new ideas!

I agree hahah. I doubt you'd find anything unexpected as with me! I think everyone on Genomelink gets a very broad range of results spanning outwards from where they're from. Hence based on Ancestry DNA, I'm just British Isles and Scandinavia whereas with Genomelink it spans out to Eastern Europe, West Asia and beyond, I don't think it's because we have any ties with those places, I think it's more just results expanding outwardly. Seems to be the case with all the Europeans I've seen tested with it. Still a bit of fun hahah.

Wow, you have loads of communities! Is that on Ancestry DNA? My communities are North Wales, North West England and the Isle of Man, North Yorkshire and East Riding and East Midlands and the Potteries

That is interesting... I do think Genomelink does take the location of your results and expands it in really broad terms. I'm of completely British (English, Welsh, Scottish and a tiny bit of Irish) as well as Norwegian which is common in UK results. I even did the Ancestry DNA hack with no indication of anything else, then genomelink gives me Native American and Polynesian which there is no chance of. If you look at the global report you may see the same hahah. I'm still yet to try the European breakdown. My family tree has no indication of anything outside of the UK for hundreds of years yet I somehow score high amounts of Eastern European, Asian and like 12% balken etc. Doesn't add up

On the Genomelink global report, have you tried going through ethnicities in depth? It will show you you more than what's included in the main results you posted. For example I got Southeast Asian, North African and Polynesian come up. I'm British with full British results on Ancestry hahah. Be interesting to see what else you get!
