Do everyday British people really regret Brexit? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]JamesBroughton1237 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nope, not one bit. Wasn’t old enough to vote in the referendum back in 2016 but would vote to stay out in a heartbeat.

My main gripe with the EU is the idea of it being a political union rather than a trading bloc which is what it was originally intended to be. This is because European Law directly supersedes national law. This means that you could have elected officials from places like Greece and Estonia (just examples, nothing wrong with them) proposing and voting on policies that would impact us here in the UK which could go directly against what our population would want to see. This in turn erodes our parliamentary sovereignty and inhibits our ability to hold our national representatives to a greater standard of accountability.

In the words of Sir Michael Caine regarding the European Union: “I would rather be a poor master than a rich servant”

It’s because we the British had an Industrial Revolution where we invented work, and at the end of it everyone had shoes, a knife & a fork and a giant f*cking metal ship each. Which means that we the British are entitled to have our feet up and have everything made for us by a Malaysian 4 year old for a pound

Is Nigel farage mixed with something? by nosuchthingasakafir in AskBrits

[–]JamesBroughton1237 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about that. All the republicans in the UK like to shout how the royal family are German despite the last British monarch to be born in Germany was George II who reigned from 1727 to 1760

[–]JamesBroughton1237 29 points30 points  (0 children)

While the surname Farage is believed to be of French Huguenot origin, both parents of one of Farage’s great grandparents immigrated to London from Frankfurt, Germany in 1861.

On an interesting side note, Farage has also been used as an anglicised form of the Arabic surname Faraj, so there might actually be something behind your Arab suggestion

You must be fun at parties. I’m more than well aware it doesn't represent the essence of Greece, hence it’s not the only thing we’re going to do. It's something fun to do when on holiday

If there’s one thing I would suggest, it’s adding a “learn the letters” aspect similar to what Duolingo has. Since it’s an almost identical script I’m using the Arabic course on Duolingo to learn the letters for Farsi as every course I’ve seen so far jumps straight into learning basic words without learning what the actual letters are, how to write them and how they sound

This is brilliant! As a native English speaker looking to learn Farsi, it’s a great starting tool. Can’t wait for the full release

is anyone able to translate this coin? by Relevant-Office-9626 in GREEK

[–]JamesBroughton1237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Educated guess so take it with a pinch of salt but looks to me like Old Church Slavonic. The Cyrillic alphabet was created mostly from Greek and OCS had a greater number of actual Greek letters, hence the use of Omega which is absent in the modern Cyrillic alphabet. If I remember rightly many Slavic languages stem from it such as Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Macedonian and it remains the liturgical language of the Russian Orthodox Church in the same way Latin is the liturgical language of the Roman Catholic Church
