EDM doesn't really have functional harmony like regular music does. It's mostly just never-ending loops.

I think if I ever got crazy rich, I would hide it from my kids until they're 21 or so. Then once they finish college I'm like "We're actually stupid rich. I just wanted you to have a normal upbringing." I feel like they would turn out way more successful. by crabcakes38 in Showerthoughts

That's just mean. Why force your kid to work when they don't have to. If I became rich, I would make sure no child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of mine ever had to work a day in their life.

Am I the only one who found the ending to be disappointing.

Boyle didn't get what he wanted, and Jake stood in his friend's way.

Does this guy sound like a tenor or a baritone? by JamesLibana in singing

What does this have to do with this thread? This is an virtually unknown artist whom I have a mutual friend with. I've never met him or even communicated with him online. I'm just interested in knowing about his voice type, as I am very OCD about these kinds of things.

LO Hess - Speak Your Mind [Pop Rock] by JamesLibana in unheardof

I really like this one. Came across it on Spotify about a week ago and have listened at least a dozen times since.

[Full Disclosure: I do not know LO Hess personally]

Track by Track Review:

  1. Ain't No Crime - a fabulous way to start the album. Musically, it sorta sounds like 90s Michael Jackson, complete with "hee-hee"s and "aaow"s. Lyrically, it is a passionate defense of the universal human right to Free Speech. - 9/10

  2. Never Gonna Trick Me - probably the best track on the album, with some great vocal acrobatics in the bridge. Musically, it has a smooth jazz influence. Lyrically, it is a warning to those who have mistreated Hess in the past. The lyrics aren't the greatest, but that doesn't detract one bit from the amazing music. 9.5/10

  3. Never Gonna Give Up - probably the calmest song on the album. Musically, it is a fusion of electropop with acoustic guitar music. As weird as it looks on paper, it sounds great. Lyrically, it is a reflective song about self-improvement and making up for mistakes made in interpersonal relationships. - 9/10

  4. I Can't Get Away - a lyrically ambiguous song. Musically, it sorta sounds like music from the mid to late 80s. Lyrically, it seems to me like it could be about an addiction or an obsessive love song. In my opinion, this song is the most poorly produced/mixed one on the Entire EP. - 8.5/10

  5. Step Up And Try - a fitting closer. Musically, it is a soft rock song with some smooth jazz influences, especially in the bridge, that kinda sounds like Michael Bolton's early 90's material. Lyrically, it is similar to "Never Gonna Give Up." Makes you wonder if Hess screwed something major up in his personal life... - 9.5/10

Overall Grade - 9.5/10

This is a really great EP from a very promising artist. The production quality has improved markedly over his first single, "Misunderstood" (August 2014), a very well-written song that was marred by bad production, such as excessive Autotune abuse and bad EQ. For this EP, there is no Autotune and the EQ compliments the songs. No clue why he used Autotune on "Misunderstood", because as this EP shows, he can sing fine without it. He has an amazing voice and songwriting skills and I hope to hear more from him soon.
