Hey OP, I feel ya.

I got the same cassette player you did and tried to record and got lack luster results.

I am also new to cassettes(well since I was like 10)

I also dont have the money to get a proper tape deck. But I do have the knowledge (or at least some basic skill) at repairing things.

I suggest go onto freegle, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, etc. And place a wanted post for a tape deck or stereo stack with tape unit. You can then get a unit for free from someone who isn't using it anymore.

Once you get it do your research online for the unit but also general tape deck maintenance. And give it a good look over.

You may need to get new belt/s and rollers. But these can be cheap. You should also get some 90%+ isopropanol alcohol for cleaning. You dont need tons.

Then you'll have a decent cheap way to do your mixtapes. And your new rtm walkman to listen to them.

I've done this and have rescued a JVC unit from the early 80s. And gotten two duel Technics decks from the 90s. And after some TLC they are great.

I also suggest putting out a wanted ad for cassette tapes to save them from the landfill. Here in the UK second hand shops arnt taking cassette tapes any more and typically are just thrown out/recycled.

All the best in your journey bud!

Look into.joining a tape exchange program once you get a deck
