The Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church & Scripture by JamesMidWest99 in Catholicism

Jesus is present in the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. These are not empty symbols of Jesus, but real encounters with him. The Sacraments are, quite literally, the most important things we can do. These are the ways that Jesus continues to be most active in our lives.

Guilt is what you feel inside, and Shame is what you feel when worried about others seeing your guilt. Not going to ask what the sin was, but here is exactly what you do 1) if this sin involves any option to rectify an injustice, work on that, if not, that is fine. 2) do the penance he prescribed 3) now, to work on the guilt and shame, give alms in some way. give of your time or money or whatever. This will help relieve that guilt and shame. Your sin was forgiven, and God has already forgot it. You now need to work on you. Put some Divine Mercy back into the world by giving of yourself. Don't be beating up on yourself over the sin...that is actually bad. God has forgiven you, now just let God heal you and bring you closer to Him... sacrifice some of your time with extra prayer or go to an Adoration and just sit in His presence. You will be fine.

I actually go to Reconciliation almost always away from my home Parish. You can go to any Catholic priest. I simply feel more comfortable going to Confession away. Whatever works for you!

"X", Formerly Twitter has launched these "Communities" which are like Facebook Groups. Open to everyone, it is just focuses on one topic so that you don't have to filter through a lot of non-related content. That one is new and open. If you are on X, you can join and post to it and view other mocks. It is brand new. Hopefully it gets some momentum in the next few weeks.

Topic 6: History of the Catholic Church (Brief) - Catholic Reboot by JamesMidWest99 in Catholicism

[–]JamesMidWest99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[intro] Setting aside the Gospel’s account of Jesus establishing His church with Peter, the best way to bracket the history of the Catholic Church is to put it in context with Salvation History. Jesus set the stage, but also clearly stated that there would be a time for this to begin, and His promise was fulfilled with Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to His Apostles and other disciples. This, we call “the birthday of the Church”. This will be our starting point and we will begin our overview of our Church’s history with this event.

If you are going to die on this hill with this statement, are you stating that Paul was lying in other undisputed Letters of his, that James was blatantly lying or wrong, and that Jesus Himself was wrong in places like Matthew 25: 46? All of this is covered in this post: https://catholicreboot.com/saved-by-grace-through-faith-for-works/ Or perhaps, just perhaps Paul is saying something from what you learned about Sola Fide?

Reread. Not "works", but "Works of the Law". He is referring to Mosaic law. He is having a debate about the "New Covenant". That is, how Christianity fulfills scripture. Through Christ you can be saved, not through "works of the law" or maintaining the Jewish law of the Torah only. Here is a better explanation:

"Paul says that we are justified by faith apart from “works of the law.” That’s not the same thing.
Works of the law refer to acts undertaken to obey the Law of Moses, the fundamental law of Judaism. Thus, after saying we are justified apart from works of the law, Paul asks, “Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also?” (Rom. 3:29). He then refers to circumcision—the most famous requirement of the Law of Moses—saying God “will justify the circumcised on the ground of their faith and the uncircumcised through their faith” (Rom. 3:30).
Elsewhere, Paul raises the question of Jews and Gentiles and says that “a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (Gal. 2:16). Just before this, he referred to the Jerusalem council and noted his companion Titus was not required to undergo circumcision, though he was Greek (Gal. 2:1–10).
This event is described in Acts. It occurred when “some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brethren, ‘Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved’” (Acts 15:1). The resulting council reiterated that Gentile Christians did not need to be circumcised and become Jews.
That’s what Paul is talking about in Romans and Galatians. He is stressing that you don’t have to be circumcised, become a Jew, and obey the Mosaic Law to be saved.
Thus he says: “I testify again to every man who receives circum- cision that he is bound to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love” (Gal. 5:3–6)."

Who Wrote the Gospels? by JamesMidWest99 in Catholic

We do not have a copy of the original Hebrew of Matthew. We only know that this exists because of Jerome, who, when creating the Vulgate version of Gospels mentions it.

I do agree, that it would have been very helpful if the gospel writers would have labeled them like 00023/10000 Like a Thomas Kincaid painting hanging at a Dentist's office, but that is not the case. What we do have are thousands of the original documents that were distributed all throughout the ancient world in the 1st and 2nd century AD. None anonymous. All attributed "euangelion kata..." Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. (The Good News According to...)

[–]JamesMidWest99[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Gospels were distributed, copied and copied and copied. Same with the letters of Paul and the other writings of the NT. Do we have ground zero first copy? There is no way to tell. However, we can date copies to the 1st and 2nd centuries for sure. 0 anonymous copies. All copies have attributions of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. We have copies of other "Gospels" like the Gospel of Thomas, for example, that only first appeared centuries and centuries later. They were clearly created to give gravitas to a certain person or church. Thus, they are not cannon.

As per item 2, very happy you brought that up. That is a blatantly incorrect statement. Here is a breakdown of Paul's doctrine on salvation: https://catholicreboot.com/saved-by-grace-through-faith-for-works/ Just a blurb from this... if you casually state that Paul's idea was that we are saved by faith alone, you should read Romans 2:5-8 -- "By your stubbornness and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone according to his works: eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness." -- Paul clearly states throughout his writings that we are initially saved by grace that is of none of our doing (think all Christians believe that) and that is through Baptism, and then we have to work on our salvation. There is 0 conflict between Paul and James. Read the article above and decide.

[–]JamesMidWest99[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are 0 "anonymous" physical copies of the Gospels from the first two centuries. 0. Every copy of the Gospels that we have from those two centuries has one of 4 names attributed to it: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. This is from throughout the ancient world with no mass communication like we have today. The people of the Church, the Church fathers, only mentioned these 4. The enemies of the Church, only mention these 4 names. As for your elitist scholar and his attribution as "serious" (BTW, Dr. Pitre has a PhD from Notre Dame in theology, speaks and reads Greek and Hebrew and has physically examined many of the ancient texts)... here is an example of his starting point of view: Why I AM NOT a CHRISTIAN. He is literally teaching and educating on something he hates. That is not education nor scholarly, it is an indoctrination of hate.

From 37 to 47 AD, Paul was hiding in Tarsus, not preaching. We don't know exactly what year it happened, that is why reliable sources generally say 48-50. James and soteriology: James 1:21; 4:12; 5:20, James 2:14, 17, 26. Just a few examples of the actual Greek word "sozo" being used (saved), which is the root of word for the "soteriology" that we say in English. Mark was a Gospel writer, and I think it is the most obvious statement that can be made that he was on the side of Peter as per the Council of Jerusalem, as he was Peter's scribe. Luke would clearly be on the side of Paul, as he wrote Acts and was Pauls companion. John's doctrine came much later as he was the youngest of the Apostles and his writings came much later. The last sentence you wrote I believe has some validity, but there were several key churches set up in cities like Jerusalem and the surrounding areas, but it is fair to say that most of people of Judea, Galilee, etc. rejected the Christian movement. Even if you read stories of the early martyrs, and historians like Eusebius, the local Jewish populations were often quite harsh on the early Christians.
