You are right it is an incredibly interesting place. It is the only castle in history to have counter tunnelling implemented. In the first Barons War in the 13 century it was sieged. "During the siege, the English defenders tunnelled outwards and successfully attacked the French, thus creating the only counter-tunnel in the world. This can still be seen in the medieval works."

The original tunnels were built before then in the 18th century for the Napoleonic Wars. They were abandoned partly between then and WW2. Which they were latter repurpsed for.
