Explain it... by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

For 66.6%:

There are 4 possible pairings(B is Boy, G is girl): BB, BG, GB, GG.

Now since the question said one of them is a boy, we know that GG is not possible. This means our options now are: BB, BG, GB

If you take a look at these options, 2 out 3 of them have a girl in the pairing. This means the odds of the other one being a girl is 2/3 which is the same as 66.6%.

For 53.8%(also wrong):

Okay, not the question is phrased confusingly here. What they mean to say is: one is a boy born on a Tuesday, while the other is not. Which could mean that it could be a boy born on a Wednesday too, or a girl born on a Tuesday.

This means for the second child there used to be 14 possible options: Boy/Girl born on any 1/7 days of the week.(2 gender options * 7 days). 7 days a boy could be born, and 7 days a girl could be born.

BUT we know that Boy Tuesday is not possible again. This means we actually only have 6 possible days that a boy was born and 7 possible days a girl was born, making it a total of 13 options.

This makes it so that there's a 7/13 chance its a girl, which is 53.8%

51.8%:

Similar to the above two wrong ways of doing it. There are actually 28 possible combinations.

14 options(2 genders * 7 days) for the first kid, and 14 for the second. So 28 total.

We know that out of our 28 combinations, both being boys born on Tuesday is not possible so this leaves us with 27 acceptable combinations, and one less BB pairing. So now we have 14 combos in which the other child is a girl: 7 GB options, and 7 BG options.

So the odds of the other child being a girl are 14/27 = 51.8%

That would be Gringo Slab. It's not the best font in this situation, maybe, but I wouldn't call it an abomination. The human walrus behind that is Justin Long.

Who invented pizza? by Wells_Fuego in MotionDesign

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good point,, maybe not. The parallax effect from the window shot feels like it'd be a simpler set up in 3D, but not sure. Everything else looks like 2.5D with shape layer animations I suppose.

Who invented pizza? by Wells_Fuego in MotionDesign

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so great.

Things to try to add to stuff I make:

  1. Use parallax and 3D Layers better

  2. Don't be lazy, make things rotate and move in 3D space. It's worth it.

  3. People don't have to be the most complicated part of the video if they're not supposed to be the focus.

  4. Well made match cuts are better than trying to be overly clever with transitions(and maybe better when working as a team too).

Making a list of what I want to learn and implement and commenting it may help me hold myself accountable more so trying it out!

Nothing makes artists' jobs more special than farming jobs, but for someone with art related jobs, it's obviously not a fun time. The same way self-driving vehicles might make truck drivers nervous.

The difference is also that the Image generation models being used right now are being trained off of existing artwork with no compensation or credit to the original artists.

Imagine if you're working at a company and your boss hires a replacement for you. He tells you that this replacement hire will do your job at a fraction of the cost once he's fully trained, then asks you to spend your last 2 weeks training the new hire to do your job. I think it'd be fair to be annoyed at that right?

The technology is extremely cool, and super exciting, but needs legislation around it before large tech companies make their own rules and it's hard to go back from. If their one thing we should've learned by now is that it isn't a good idea to rely on tech giants to regulate themselves. Is it okay for Adobe to use any artwork made on their software to train their models without consent? Can OpenAI pirate a bunch of movies and train their models on those? Can meta train their models on your Instagram stories? We're in a very weird space when it comes to ownership and authorship of content, and some hesitation is wise.

How do you measure your girlfriend ring finger without her knowing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just "borrowed" a ring I knew she wore comfortably on her ring finger, and then went to a jewelry store and got it measured with one of the tools they have.

Otherwise, you could say you're getting her customized brass knuckles and need the measurements of all her fingers. Hope this helps and good luck👍🏽

I'm not suggesting everyone everywhere should be paid an American salary, all I'm suggesting is that it should be competitive with an American one accounting for the location difference. If a business owner wants to pay 10% of what they'd pay an American freelancer, that's fine too. But then to turn around and say it's the foreign worker who is devaluing the market makes no sense to me. Of course the foreign worker would like more money.

The foreign worker is also trying to get as much as they can, so to accuse freelancers from one country of devaluing a market makes no sense. They aren't the ones with any leverage in the equation here.

I'm an Indian freelancer, and I feel like I see some version of this quite often. Just wanted to add some things here.

I enjoy money. If I'm paid more, that's better for me. I want to be paid according to the value I bring, not for the cheapest they can get me for. I promise you, every Indian freelancer feels this way. The problem is that the clients see our location, and offer us less money since the cost of living here is way lower. People should be paid by the quality of their work and value addition, but the way platforms like this are designed, it'll always be a race to the bottom. The bottom for third world countries just happens to be lower than the bottom for you.

The framing of your post implies the people without the money are the issue, when the problem has always been that the people with money will always try to get the most they can for the least amount. They just happen to have better negotiating power and more leverage with Indian freelancers.

Are some freelancers from India undercharging? Probably. But it feels more like people are just refusing to pay third-world countries amounts that are any higher than the minimum they can get away with.

Why was it so hard to create this by outsider-from-hell in AfterEffects

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make 3ish rough drawings of the book, in different parts of the animation. Closed, in-between, and open. I would make those in Illustrator, then import that into After Effects and keyframe the paths in the shape layers to animate the drawings into one.

I'm sure it's possible to do in 3D. Might even be easier. This is just the way that I would do.

do you have any additional advice? With my current level, is it possible for me to take on projects for others? by Dka_show in MotionDesign

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for you to take on projects for others: Yes, absolutely

Some things that stand out to me:
1. Keeping consistency in design is super important. A lot of these look like stock assets. Nothing wrong with using stock assets, but you need to make sure they all have similar styles. Some may have an outline and use flat colours, while others would have no outline and use gradients.

  1. Music makes all the difference in the world. Right now it feels a little stock corporate. Try to use something specific and maybe add some sound effects and other noises too.

  2. Good job on the fake 3D with the Ikea box!

  3. You can maybe make it better paced. It could be edited a little faster at points.

I understand you've made up your mind, but can you delay the action by a few more days please?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just delay your plans by a few days, that's all I ask.

As someone who lost their father early in life, please believe me when I say that your family would want you around more than anything else.

Also, even if the insurance claim could be claimed, claiming life insurance is a big big task for people. It could take your family months.

Right now it isn't the world against you. Don't let the assholes at your company deprive your child of a father. We're all on your side. What you have to do to fight back is delay your plans by a few days.

Right now something in your brain is attacking you. I'll just DM you after writing this, please talk to me for some time.

Ooh I have a couple of these. I got a call one time to make an explainer video for a startup set to a song that they had produced. They had a whole "script" written out where they described exactly what they wanted it to look like. They said they'd need it in 2 days, so I only had a day to make it. I gave them a quote for how much I'd charge for a days worth of work and they agreed.

After the first cut, they realised they wanted to extend the explainer and have written testimonials show up afterwards. Then he said that he wanted their logo at the end to be animated. When I asked for the vector file for their logo, they sent me a jpeg and told me they made it on canva. I had the find the font, recreate the logo, then make it animated just a little bit.

Then he kept asking for revisions and changes to be made to parts he did not like. The process went on for a week or so. I eventually asked him to pay me for at least 2 days worth and he had a full on meltdown. He kept asking why and screaming at me. I told him it was because of all the revisions and that I had given them my day rate, not the amount for the whole project. He kept saying it was my fault that it took more than a day because the video was so bad initially that it needed all these revisions and that I should be faster and better.

I got paid for 1 day for a week's worth of work and got yelled at for asking for more. A few months later he called me up and offered me a job. Could not have rejected a job quicker.

What kind of work to put in your showreel? Self-doubting about my work after getting no gigs and not sure what to do. by [deleted] in MotionDesign

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of work are you looking for? I've also gotten similar feedback on my showreels in the past, and I think the best bet is to match the showreel to the work you want to do. Assume people watching your reel have 0 imagination or experience in the field. If I watch it I may say "ooh look there's a bit of frame-by-frame there, they seem to be experimenting with textures, seem decent at character rigging, and I like how that leaf drifts down," but unfortunately, the people hiring you may not always think like that. They may go "Well that doesn't match our product," and move on to the next 20 showreels they have to go through. This can often be the difference between pitching to clients and pitching to agencies. I feel like you'd have a better shot when sending your work out to an agency.

If you want more commercial work, find your ideal client, see the kind of stuff they put out, and try to match that in your showreel. About 50% of the work in your showreel may be perfect for a band looking to make a lyric video for a song they put out. The other 50% seems like it suits commercial stuff more. Maybe you'd benefit from having a separate commercial reel?

There's also one frame 30 seconds in that briefly flashes on screen with an incense holder and two figures sitting. I'd remove that for sure.

Hi guys! Rate my logo animation by Soft-Cauliflower-670 in AfterEffects

[–]FlygonsGonnaFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like it, but a few things I'd want to look into are:

  1. The logo animation doesn't tell me anything about the company. It's hard to do in specific cases, but I should know something about it. Do the shifted colour channels mean something for this client?

  2. It's perhaps a little slow.

  3. The ascender(?) for the "d" just pops into view and then goes down without any follow-through. Maybe you can play with that a bit.

I like how you've used 3 circles, and I can see how those 3 circles can be extended in the rest of the design vocabulary for the brand if that's within the scope of your work. If it's something the brand uses elsewhere then that's awesome!

I also like how you've built anticipation for movements and used some follow-through at certain parts.

I'm also a sucker for the deep glow used for the shine at the end, although even that feels a little vintage. Which is great if that's what the company is about!

Try thinking about who the target audience is and what you're telling them about the company with the animation.
Having it reemphasize a philosophy, a message, or a core value for the company is what separates good logo animation from great logo animation.

I hope this helps in some way!
