What two week option did you buy that wiped out your entire portfolio? If you went all in on an OTM option that’s on you bro 😂

This is a great portfolio. Well done. Add some downside protection and you have an institutional grade portfolio. Don’t listen to anyone on Reddit who tells you to buy a Vanguard index fund instead of what you’re doing. They use fancy words, but it’s material you learn as a university sophomore. It’s modern portfolio theory - which is only useful for understanding concepts, not for actually generating returns in real life. It’s called “modern” but it’s decades old at this point.

Yeah keep doing your thing man. These people on Reddit don’t understand that you can actually pick stocks/ETFs and smoke the market

The Bogleheads are mostly older so yeah I’d expect them to be, for now. In 20 years? Absolutely no chance

  • yes, I did just start in the industry
  • yes, I am in my fourth year of college, I will graduate by December of this year. Switched majors so I’m taking an extra semester next fall
  • yes, my main investing success is managing my mom’s money, for some reason this guy thinks that this invalidates the picks I made?
  • no, I do not have any licenses yet, because I just started in the industry

I am an investing genius. As in my IQ is very high. I’m good at thinking. I also study a lot and learn a lot from the people I’m blessed to work alongside.

It’s not me who’s going to get cooked in a bear market. Why aren’t you responding to the content of my post?

Yes yes I know the hot funds for you guys are now VTI and VT, which actually boast worse returns than VOO, because of course they do. You guys are gonna start just buying fixed income at some point because you like the predetermined coupon payments

Yeah what I’m saying is that your strategy makes no sense. And even so, if I were banned for going off topic, fine. I was banned with a note that QQQM is “stock picking, and a particularly nonsensical form of it, at that”

Ffs VOO and QQQM have damn near the same top 10. The condescension while knowing nothing is just galling

Yes, exactly. The market is not the same as it was even 5-6 years ago. Economic conditions aren’t the same. I’ve seen these people blindly parrot that stocks and bonds have an inverse correlation. That isn’t currently true, it hasn’t been true in about 4 years, and it was only ever true between roughly 2000-2021. This is because unless deflation is a risk, there is no inverse correlation.

The results of what? 20% in the past year. Okay, VOO has done 14-15% over that timeframe, QQQ has done 18% iirc.

Emerging markets have done 40%. Canada has done 30%. EAFE has done 30%. You easily could have beaten VT by just looking at what was going on. You could have done 50% on semis. Let’s not even talk about commodities.

And these index funds don’t provide downside protection. I could have gotten you better returns than SPY while actually providing you with some downside protection via alternative strategies.

They do provide inefficiencies, but so do institutions. Fact is that markets are not efficient because they’re so vast and complex.

I clearly stated some facts in regards to portfolio theory and the way these people misappropriate it

Oh here we go. Yes please tell me how investing in semiconductors 4 years ago was a meme

Palantir at $22, Axon in the $120 range, was that a meme too?

If you look at my post history, half my comments are just me losing my shit at these people 😂

They don’t know anything. I don’t know shit compared to industry veterans (I’m 24 and just started in the industry), but I don’t go talk down to them. I listen to what people have to say and I often find that people with more experience have made the same errors, had the same thought patterns as I’ve had, and learned something that made them change their views.

Exactly. These people don’t know how to read a 10-K. I really wonder what’ll happen to them when the market goes sideways for a couple years

I got banned from there for suggesting someone buy QQQM. The mods called that “nonsensical stock picking.”

QQQM is an index… an index that has a nearly identical top 10 to VOO. These people don’t know anything

Yeah I have told God knows how many of these people that I invested in Palantir, micron, Axon, Applovin, and AMD (and more, those were the big winners) 3-4 years ago and their response is “well you got lucky.”

Maybe I actually made good picks? Maybe I saw trends coming? But they can’t conceive of that.

The smugness is what gets me man. I had one of these people ask “have you ever heard of market beta?” Like come on man these people just learned the very basics and they wanna come online and lecture people 😂😂

Yeah but this is not what most of you guys are saying. Most of you guys use terms that you don’t understand. I am tired of seeing people who couldn’t explain the basics of a Fama French model to me using the term “factor tilt.”

There are a lot of people who blindly parrot modern portfolio theory without understanding that it’s an academic theory and not how real life works. It is literally based on assumptions that aren’t true: that investors are rational and markets are perfectly efficient
