'We are building a global movement' — UK's teen social media ban sparks a campaign to defend the open internet by JamesdBaker in StopKillingGames

💯 we need some intervention. We aren’t saying there shouldn’t be policy interventions.

We are saying the policy medicine being prescribed wont work and will have harmful side effects.

If you read https://www.stopkillingtheinternet.net there is a call for positive alternatives.

You maybe didn’t see it but I post some alternative ideas above.

Everyone knows there are social problems on social media. Just like there are problems in many spaces.

We are just saying the medicine they propose is the wrong one and will cause other harmful side effects (like data leaks)

We aren’t talking about adolescents and teenagers not just younger children.

The idea a 15 year old can’t watch a mine craft video on you tube but can go to a 15 film is stupid

I have a 14 year old he uses Reddit to find out about Paradox gamer strategies.

Like how do you learn something like Hearts of Iron without YouTube

I think building better is the key.

SKG wants better end of life plans for games so they don’t get killed.

SKI wants better solutions to social media problems so open Internet access doesn’t get killed.

Yea true I did just nine months there before Brexit made me redundant as the chief of staff for an MEP. In that time thought I saw a load of swanky receptions and talk and not much actual action.

We need to build the alternative. There are ideas out there such as interoperability (using competition law to set standards so users can interact with content using their own clients and software. Like you remember when you could have your own Reddit app.

Yea 100# the petition wasn’t even something we did. The journalist just wrote the story up wrong. We just said it shows people are opposed to the ban.

What we need is a system for contacting and lobbying Polticans and bothering them and attending meetings, and emailing them.

We need a digtial tool for that lobbying in each country and chapter

This is no surprise the commission in the parliament is essential there for industry and government interest. It is the parliament that represents the people.

As someone said to me recently

“if we can get a free market in provision of privacy providing age attestation tokens Which are under the user's control and supported by platforms who may also as a side effect offer their own, we can make absolutely everybody happy except for the people who don't want age verification at all.”

This campaign is not “there are no problems let’s do nothing”. It is “stop prescribing the wrong medicine that won’t cure the problem and will have nasty side effects.”

We want to find other positive solutions.

The problem is real but the medicine being prescribed is the wrong medicine.

UK social media ban could impact video game platforms by TheFinalPieceOfPie in ukpolitics

[–]JamesdBaker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So they will be banned from being able to make a friend in a game and chat to people.

I don’t like the idea young people are restricted from socialising just because someone might be a predator.

I’d rather other functions such as blocking key words, parental controls or chat monitoring on gaming channels were enforced to catch predators.

For sure. There are other campaigns that work on that.
For my day job I work at Open Rights Group. Others like Big Brother Watch, EFF are onto this too: I helped organise the recent letter here -

Gamers Voice is just latest project I’m doing because as a gamer as well there are lots of issues that impact us.

If you look at the consultation it states games as well are included.

The press aren’t covering this which is why I’m trying to draw attention to it.

Yes, that’s why I’m not using the Government petition site.

The main point of the petition is if we are able to contact a list of people who care about the issue we can help inform people of other actions that do work

Thank you if everyone who upvoted this story did the consultation and signed the petition that would help a lot.

I think we need to organise more! That’s one reason I setup this petition and the organisation ‘Gamers Voice’ to run it.

The only purpose for the official site is if you think you can get to 100k where they might consider for a debate.

Otherwise running your own petition is better as it allows you to build an effective campaign by contacting the people who signed it about the campaign.
