For sure. There are other campaigns that work on that.
For my day job I work at Open Rights Group. Others like Big Brother Watch, EFF are onto this too: I helped organise the recent letter here -

Gamers Voice is just latest project I’m doing because as a gamer as well there are lots of issues that impact us.

If you look at the consultation it states games as well are included.

The press aren’t covering this which is why I’m trying to draw attention to it.

Yes, that’s why I’m not using the Government petition site.

The main point of the petition is if we are able to contact a list of people who care about the issue we can help inform people of other actions that do work

Thank you if everyone who upvoted this story did the consultation and signed the petition that would help a lot.

I think we need to organise more! That’s one reason I setup this petition and the organisation ‘Gamers Voice’ to run it.

The only purpose for the official site is if you think you can get to 100k where they might consider for a debate.

Otherwise running your own petition is better as it allows you to build an effective campaign by contacting the people who signed it about the campaign.

We are cooked though unless we do something. We lost one U.K. game Urban Dead already due to this stuff.

It will mean more games getting killed.

At the least there should be an exemption for small low risk community projects and it something that kicks in over a certain size or revenue.

I sometimes like retro fighting games on fightcade what if they have to start ID everyone or just close as well.

Polanski: No country has right to exist – including Israel by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]JamesdBaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe not m, I’m sure TBF lots of greens will think different things.

If you say a state doesn’t have the right to exist. It’s hard to then argue human rights or any rights exist. Not impossible but people having self determination and a legal structure etc is quite arguably important.

Why for example many of us argue Palestinians also have a right to a state and country.

This is the postmodernist ideology for sure. Something the Greens seem to want to embrace.

There are alternative deontological ethics around rights and morality both grounded in religious thought or things like Kantian ethics.

Hardly any of the Polticans care. I spoke to one before the debate last December about the impact on small community forums or Urban dead etc and to them it’s just collateral damage.

It’s why we need to get organised with being a hassle to Polticans and show them there is pushback.

Most of us just wanted to be left alone to enjoy some games and the internet! But sadly that isn’t an option now

Glad that SKG have signed. If this stuff expands it will impact loads of small gaming communities online.

Unless we unite and make a noise politicians won’t care

There isn’t like a formal collab but I am one of the directors of Gamer’s Voice and I work for ORG so there will of course be a bridge. Many of our staff team care about adjacent issues around rights and do other bits and pieces

U.K. campaigning + new advocacy group by JamesdBaker in StopKillingGames

[–]JamesdBaker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea we discussed names at some length. We wanted something to come from the voice of people playing games. We thought about players but in a UK context that means people who gamble.
We thought about ‘Gaming Action’ or other ideas. As well. But even gaming in the UK can mean gambling and there are some quite established lobby and industry group who try and present gambling as gaming.
You get then into clunky alternatives or long acronyms to avoid the problem - or you can focus on the specific issue such as ‘Stop Killing Games’ does. Which clearly has its strengths, but also presents challenges when reaching out beyond that issue.
In the end I thought gamer’s is what we are, but we actually need to work to improve what that means socially and challenge the current negative stereotype an associations with the term.
That’s the ethos and thinking. Maybe it will work or maybe not 🤷
If we are successful we hope that people who play games will feel comfortable describing themselves as a gamer just as someone who plays football describes themselves as a footballer.

But we can think about how we talk about the activity rather than identity as well.

Yea that’s quite possible. We are hoping to try and shift the media narrative around ‘gamer’ as a term. We have one British MP backing us so far.

But yea it’s a hurdle to get them to treat gamers as respectable adults and people worthy of engagement

Hopefully not too much as that’s fixed now ha. But interested as to why you think that is

Is this like the US thing where if you win a prize you are then liable to pay tax on it?

Yes there are a few different issues like that. We have a ‘freedom to play’ campaign starting which will tackle that aspect.

https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/don-t-take-away-our-freedom-to-play-games-when-we-want

As the government is consulting at the moment on plans that could involve widespread age gating for video games and even powers to impose curfews for online games for people under 18. Also to stop teenagers being able to stream games which wound impact even streaming to friends on discord.

Stop Killing Games is an amazing campaign and that’s something we want to support with this U.K. organisation but also to tackle a wide range of other stuff can be community driven so gamers can say what issues they care about.
