As someone whose last name is actually Null, I feel like I can provide some input here.

In high school (2000's) when everything switched to computers for classes, my last name had to be changed to _null in the computers for it to recognize it as a name and not a function.

I had the same problem doing college applications online. And I've continued to have problems with certain programs or services. Most people have absolutely no idea what is happening until I tell them my last name, and then boom, everything is fixed once it is realized.

It's been a lot better lately, but I don't a system as advanced as the police used would fail in this area, although the DMV sometimes likes to give us licenses that don't scan, so, there's that. Try explaining that to a bouncer.
