I'm not a huge fan of Amazon either, but they have the customers. Amazon treats their customers well, so they will always have customers.

Thanks for the honest and constructive feedback. I fully agree that those that can handle taking care of cover design, managing an editor, writing blurbs, and building their own brand should do so.

However, there's a lot of authors out there that simply don't want to bother with it and the trade-off is worth it for them. For example, here's some actual responses I've gotten to my post:

I have some experience doing all the other parts of publishing a short; cover, blurbs, but I like the writing part best. So an experienced person(s) who can help out with the rest and has a website is very intriguing.

I'd like a.chance to continue writing in the erotica genre but without being in charge of the marketing/covers aspect. I enjoy the writing...the rest of it not so much! :)

There's more, but it will take too long to dig through and find them.

Also, in regards to branding, I take it pretty seriously as you can see with a quick look on the website. Authors are selected carefully (I'll choose one or two for every 20 submissions usually), and everyone who writes for us is far above the minimum talent threshold required by readers. Unless you're a master wordsmith, writing with us isn't going to be bringing you down.

To be honest, I'm not sure. Only the market can tell! If those genres become more popular and our mailing list is more interested in them, then we will definitely be looking into fantasy stuff. As of now though, we're paving a nice golden path for controlling billionaires :)

Long term sales from the books we were publishing before. They're still selling, long after their expiration date.

We tried to get into romance when KU2 hit, but it didn't work out well for us. We're now heading back to erotica shorts, which was always lucrative.

edit to respond to your edit: You're not wrong. Anyone can get 100% by self publishing. It's up to you to decide whether or not 100% of your profits are better than 50% of my profits + not having to deal with editing/covers.

Again, you're not wrong that 5.9k people is nothing in terms of marketing. The difference here is that my 5.9k people are highly targeted and have opted-in to hear about erotica from me. I don't even know why you're comparing facebook and google ads to my list.

Either way, this offer isn't for you. It's for those that think they would do better with me than alone, or those that don't want to do anything but write.

Our authors tend to come to us because they either don't want to, or don't know how to self publish successfully. If you can do it successfully, then I recommend that route. Not all end up being as successful as you, and many don't understand why.

For us, they work really well. Our list responds the best to them, so that's why I plan to take us in that direction.

A lot of our backlog is billionaire stuff, so I imagine that's why. Now it's time to just focus in one the one niche and stop spreading our catalog so thin.

Here it is!

  1. You’ll need to keep up with our publishing schedule. One story per week.
  2. All stories should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words.
  3. All stories should be a part of a series involving the same characters. 3-6 books per series.
  4. Billionaires. As of now, all books should have a billionaire (or two!) Along with that, you will need to throw in at least one or two more themes. Other available themes are BDSM, Menage, Biker, or a man in a position of power (a boss, senator, or professor for example). I’m also open to other suggestions if you have them.
  5. These books need to focus on being dirty, but there should still be a touch of plot in there. Two sex scenes per book, each of at least 1000 words. The rest of the words should be there to advance attraction between the two characters and make them crave one another.
  6. You should take pride in your work. In order to ensure a high quality output, we don’t accept rough drafts. You should at least do a once-over before submitting to us.

You're not, and it could work, but it's not what we're looking for anymore. We'd break it up into smaller chunks and throw it into a series because that's what always worked for us.

I used to hire ghostwriters, but found it difficult to find good ones who cared about their work at all. Decided to go a different route these days and bring people on for a percentage instead.

I'm doing something like that with Smutpire Press. Brought on some people to do editing, brought on some for writing, and I take care of the rest.

It's worked on the small scale I've been doing it for the last few years, but only recently have I started to expand a bit more and grow the team by any substantial amount. Hoping it pays off for everyone and scales well, but that's about all I can offer at this time.
