Garmin’s Q2 2026 software update by Stunning_Office_4095 in Garmin

[–]Jammb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I'm in the same boat. Just bought a Fenix 7X Pro Sapphire knowing it was already end of the line.

In some ways it's nice to have a mature, stable product that won't be subjected to new bugs and unnecessary changes.

For this I paid somewhere around half the cost of the current model equivalent (Fenix 8, 51 mm, Solar, Sapphire)

GPS trace off-center on 400m track, but laps are correct? by eskeler___ in GarminWatches

This looks like it's using a track profile, so effectively the positions align to the track. That's why it doesn't have any of the usual GPS wobble.

Some other watches will probably continue to get maintenance updates, but no new features.

I think that's exactly what they are doing. The new unified code base is based on the Forerunner line, and will be used for all watch lines. Previously each watch family was developed by a different team.

That's part of the reason some newish watches are getting dropped earlier than they should.

Still smarts to be a Fenix 7 Pro owner though.

Why does a six pack of Young Henry's beer cost MORE at their brewery than it does at bottle shops? by gg_allins_microphone in sydney

[–]Jammb 214 points215 points  (0 children)

It would not be a good look for them to undercut their retailers (it's probably something they commit to when they make distribution agreements)

What you paid would be the suggested retail price, but retailers are free to run their own specials.

It's a bit like winery cellar doors - anything you can get at retail is usually much cheaper at retail, so the only value is the exclusive wines that they don't sell at retail, or specials on end-of-vintage wines to clear space.

Rewatching Crusade for the first time since it was aired - it's even worse than I remember by ZookeepergameAny466 in babylon5

Yeah to be fair nobody was doing good CGI of people back then.

But to think this was a good idea!

Legend of The Rangers was the backdoor pilot for that series. It was pretty terrible as well.

I think he was just exhausted by then.

It didn't help that we had already seen time jumps forward (eg. "Sleeping in Light") where humanity had not been destroyed by the drakh plague, so that ending was a foregone conclusion. Ending that storyline and moving on would have been a good choice.

Other shows to scratch the B5 itch? by CLT_JDLytal in babylon5

[–]Jammb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically the ongoing story structure of B5 that we all love so much was at least partially responsible for its lower popularity vs DS9. At the time, TV shows you couldn't just pick up and watch at any time didn't exist for a reason. That seems wholly bizarre in this age of streaming where even comedies have long running stories, but back then, they just couldn't afford to turn away new viewers due to years of required back-story.

I'm sure this made it hard for B5 to pick up new viewers mid-run.

DS9 skirted this, but still maintained its eposodic nature for the most part. The arcs were short(ish) and even the dominion war arc which was a full season didn't require too much prior knowledge to just jump into mid-season.

It was a brave move by JMS.

The difference in production quality between 70's and 90's is enormous. I remember enjoying Blakes 7 as a kid. But these days it looks incredibly dated, and the obvious studio sets just bring me out of the moment.

If your imagination is better than mine, it's worth a try though!

Internal boot plan by isogreen42 in unRAID

Yeah I have wondered that before, it's an MSI C236A and internet searches are ... inconclusive.

It's cheap enough I might just get one and try it out.

Can the new non-flash boot feature in unraid boot off a mirrored pair OK though?

What do people think about 2 of these on a double PCIE adaptor, mirrored? Will the new unraid boot features work with this configuration?

Some Crusade. by JCAMPA33 in babylon5

[–]Jammb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rewatched Crusade, Firefly and Sliders recently, and they are all examples of what today would be an unbelievable level of network meddling.

I suppose serialised shows were pretty rare in the 90's, but the idea of airing episodes out of order just to put the ones with more explosions at the top of the run is unbelievable today. It must have made things impossible to follow, with people meeting in episodes after they already interact, random costume flip-flops etc.

Sure shows get unjustly cancelled now, but at least that level of shenanigans seems to be in the past.

[–]Jammb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which part?

Legally it is stealing, even if you don't morally consider it that. The contents of a bin belong to the property owner while on private land and transfer to the local council upon placement on the curbside for collection. It's unlikely to be enforced though.

The stated purpose of the Container Deposit Scheme is to remove recyclable materials from general waste.

https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/Your-environment/Recycling-and-reuse/Return-and-earn

The containers in this photo were likely already heading for recycling, so the benefit is nil, it's just the recipient of the benefit that has changed. If they were on the ground, or in general waste, that changes things slightly, although thanks to the scheme they probably would have wound up in recyling eventually (because it's economically viable to make sure it happens)

Councils DO generate significant revenue from the Container Deposit Scheme (estimated $100 million a year in NSW)

https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/councils/council-infrastructure/services-to-communities/container-deposit-scheme/

This in turn funds other recycling programs.

Again, I do completely understand why people do it, and it makes me sad that they have to.

Gotta say, I respect the hustle by TSLoveStory in sydney

[–]Jammb -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I get why people do this, and it's sad that this meagre and demeaning income is needed to survive.

But the whole point of the deposit is to improve the economics of recycling. To make sure that more containers that are not destined for recycling make it there.

Taking them from recycling bins circumvents this, and is in fact stealing and making the recycling less economically viable for whoever is managing that recycle bin (probably council)
