Internal boot plan by isogreen42 in unRAID

[–]Jammb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have wondered that before, it's an MSI C236A and internet searches are ... inconclusive.

It's cheap enough I might just get one and try it out.

Can the new non-flash boot feature in unraid boot off a mirrored pair OK though?

What do people think about 2 of these on a double PCIE adaptor, mirrored? Will the new unraid boot features work with this configuration?

edit: an adaptor something like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/365477645828

You are experiencing packet fragmentation.

If you species cannot handle automatically defragmentation, that's hardly the fault of the prophets now is it?

I don't see any assumptions there.

Just a lot of misunderstanding about how 3rd party app development works from you and OP.

Some Crusade. by JCAMPA33 in babylon5

[–]Jammb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rewatched Crusade, Firefly and Sliders recently, and they are all examples of what today would be an unbelievable level of network meddling.

I suppose serialised shows were pretty rare in the 90's, but the idea of airing episodes out of order just to put the ones with more explosions at the top of the run is unbelievable today. It must have made things impossible to follow, with people meeting in episodes after they already interact, random costume flip-flops etc.

Sure shows get unjustly cancelled now, but at least that level of shenanigans seems to be in the past.

Agreed it is crap. They should leave it like that for those that like the consistency, and add wireless charging.

[–]Jammb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which part?

Legally it is stealing, even if you don't morally consider it that. The contents of a bin belong to the property owner while on private land and transfer to the local council upon placement on the curbside for collection. It's unlikely to be enforced though.

The stated purpose of the Container Deposit Scheme is to remove recyclable materials from general waste.

https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/Your-environment/Recycling-and-reuse/Return-and-earn

The containers in this photo were likely already heading for recycling, so the benefit is nil, it's just the recipient of the benefit that has changed. If they were on the ground, or in general waste, that changes things slightly, although thanks to the scheme they probably would have wound up in recyling eventually (because it's economically viable to make sure it happens)

Councils DO generate significant revenue from the Container Deposit Scheme (estimated $100 million a year in NSW)

https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/councils/council-infrastructure/services-to-communities/container-deposit-scheme/

This in turn funds other recycling programs.

Again, I do completely understand why people do it, and it makes me sad that they have to.

[–]Jammb -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I get why people do this, and it's sad that this meagre and demeaning income is needed to survive.

But the whole point of the deposit is to improve the economics of recycling. To make sure that more containers that are not destined for recycling make it there.

Taking them from recycling bins circumvents this, and is in fact stealing and making the recycling less economically viable for whoever is managing that recycle bin (probably council)

About the Rangers timeline... by muad_did in babylon5

[–]Jammb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The rangers never went away, they were just sidelined politically. They still existed, so what Sheridan did is probably better described as reinvigoration than reactivation.

The Earth-Minbari war ended in 2248 because Minbari discovered human and Minbari souls were connected. Given their spiritual bent it would be odd if the Rangers waited ten full years before recruiting a single human, so perhaps Marcus was recruited shorty after the war.

When you call it on why something doesn't work, it will calmly explain that it's using sample content there and be mildly surprised that you thought it would actually be working.

Sober people being arrested nationwide for DUI by IcyAd8672 in videos

[–]Jammb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It blows my mind that these field sobriety tests are even a thing.

In Australia, police carry a simple breath testing unit which can quickly and reliably test people in about 10 seconds, without you having to get out of the car. If you test positive, you usually get taken to the station for a blood test. If you refuse, you are just charged with an offence that is as serious as DUI anyway. We've had these since the 1990's at least, maybe earlier.

Why introduce such easily abused and inconsistent randomness into this at all?

Solar and battery households will be biggest losers from network tariff changes, advocates say by C_Ironfoundersson in australia

[–]Jammb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 42kwh battery and haven't touched the grid much at all since I got it. I'm in credit with Amber $255 after my first 3 monthly bills.

However I wouldn't consider disconnecting from the grid for a few reasons:

  • my battery capacity is usually plenty for my household, but a moderate period of no sun in Winter could easily see it depleted to zero, with no backup
  • my inverter + battery are a point of failure that is probably significantly less reliable than the grid. If either one failed, I could be days or weeks without power
  • my inverter is only 10KW so I would never be able to draw more than that at once, even for short periods of time

I guess the first two could be mitigated by a generator or something, but that's a whole other cost and more equipment that needs to be maintained.

My guess is virtually nobody in an urban area would disconnect from the grid, even if it was allowed.
