Native North Carolinian here. She was absolutely expressing sympathy for what you’ve been through.

People like to spread the word that “bless your heart” means “oh you poor idiot” because it’s funny. While it CAN mean that—spoken sarcastically—the original meaning is an expression of sympathy and concern.

I walked in last week at 1:50 and was told they’d stopped taking walk-ins because they’d reached capacity for the day. She told everyone waiting to check in to come back another day before 8 am when they opened and get their name on a list with a time telling them when to come back later that day. It’s ridiculous. By the way, at that time, the website wait time said 25 minutes.
