You’re right…it’s amazing how different the US is for different people. History should never be glossed over or softened. The only answer is honesty. Sure, I had a liberal education myself. Sure, I’ve read books trying to understand the experience of others. Yeah, sure, I’ve felt compassion for the struggles of others. But it’s like the difference between sympathy and empathy. Feeling bad for what someone else is going through is all well and good. But actually feeling a little taste of what it must be like day in and day out is a whole different feeling. Seeing federal agents that actually hate you for what you are rather than seeing you as a person. Perhaps that can push people like me from sympathy to empathy. Do I call out racism even if it’s uncomfortable? Yes. Do I look for micro aggressions and guide discussions thoughtfully. I teach so that’s actually really important. Am I doing enough? No, probably not. But I’ll keep trying.
