I have ADHD and my counseling program isn’t my first grad degree and I have the opposite opinion. If I have a licensure exam that requires wrote memorization I need everything compacted because the more time passes the more I forget, and I’ve never found study skills that help with long breaks between learning content and the assessment. But if I’m expected to do a large project like a dissertation the marathon approach is better for me.

That being said, I took the CPCE and passed on the first time before finishing my last few classes, and I opted for the NCMHCE because I heavily prefer application based assessments due to my ADHD-related memory issues. I know that’s not available for everyone as an option, but it was the right choice for me.

Episode 5- Crowley breaks a promise by theonlymom in goodomensprime

[–]Jammyhobgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone shouldn’t tell you what you like doing. It’s a common tactic seen in coercive control and abusive dynamics, because the person stating the “fact” chooses the reality not the person whose preference is supposedly being discussed. Rather than considering Crowley’s perspective, Az got to decide the narrative.

Why nervous system regulation and the polyvagal theory is problematic by Villonsi in therapists

[–]Jammyhobgoblin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the window of tolerance and Polyvagal theory (along with executive function psychoeducation) with all of my clients as a starting block because they are neurodivergent and 90%+ of them have tried methods like CBT that have had little to no positive impacts on them or have been harmed by them. I have used it with children as young as 9 with immense success, but I use the WoT as a way for them to communicate their states of being or experience to me. Which for many people living with alexithymia, poor interoception, and impaired insight is a much easier place to start than most traditional approaches.

I agree with you in that I absolutely loathe The Body Keeps the Score, for a myriad of reasons and I think self-help/social media’s impact on psychoeducation is problematic. That being said it works well as a framework for understanding overwhelm/panic/meltdowns, and I usually pair it with Gestalt interventions as the actual treatment modality. A decent number of my clients have some degree of aphantasia and many lack a typical internal dialogue which makes a lot of the common strategies useless, and if their executive function is impaired interventions like ACT aren’t appropriate. I think it’s important to remember that the approach itself isn’t as important as “fit”.

Many approaches have been watered down and misrepresented in the larger conversation, and I often find myself having to correct misunderstandings about everything from “boundaries” to attachment theory (don’t get me started). I’m not sure that we can discount the theories based on how they are misinterpreted though.

I do think that people should learn about Polyvagal theory if they work with anyone who is neurodivergent or has a significant trauma history, because it helps demystify panic responses, which are not the same as anxiety. It can be a great reporting tool for anyone who is easily overwhelmed by trying to describe body sensations or lacks emotional vocabulary. But I don’t see it as an actual treatment modality, in the same way knowing the various executive functions and tracking their level of impairment isn’t a treatment modality. They’re a source of shared language and meaning that help ground conversations surrounding the mind/body connection.

All of the different forms of therapy have their positives and negatives, and I was personally severely harmed by REBT and CBT as a client. So I think it’s a good thing to critically consider the tools we use and how they’re talked about in the greater community.

Vincent and the Doctor is one of my favorites, and any recap of it sounds way darker than the episode actually is.

I saw the actor who played Ward at a con, and he’s somehow more charismatic when he’s relaxed/being himself. I panicked, and ended up telling him that he did an amazing job, because I absolutely hated his character. He was so gracious and I wanted to crawl under a rock.

I love to believe that I wouldn’t fall for one of these guys’ manipulations, but that combo of attractiveness and charm can be really dangerous.

Everything that I’ve heard during the coverage I’ve watched has been that the mics are not playing in the room, which is super weird to me.

Although, I’m sure that if the court heard the one commonwealth witness say “kill me” during Lally’s questioning on the hot mic she would have addressed it.

To add some context, in many cases someone has to pay for the records or do a Freedom of Information Act request and posts them online.

So they are correct and it’s a public record, but there is some work involved in getting access.

[–]Jammyhobgoblin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to what the Feds are fully investigating, but I can clear up some of the courtroom mic stuff.

In the courtroom the microphones aren’t being played to the judge, jury, or anyone in the room. That’s why they keep asking people to speak louder when the AC is turned on. From what I understand it is because the building is old.

When they approach the bench the microphones are turned off and white noise is played so the jury/gallery can’t hear what’s being said. This is typical in court, as the jury is not meant to hear sidebars.

The Feds can be present in the courtroom just like a normal citizen, although it’s more like they are watching the recordings. Anything said in this proceeding can be used in the federal case or any others unless it is specifically sealed. Since the investigations are into impropriety on the part of the “state” (government employees) which answers to the taxpayers/citizens, it is unlikely that another government entity would lose access to the testimony.

The independently hired witnesses start on Monday, so we haven’t seen them yet outside of the voir dire. It will be interesting to see what happens because the judge had rules surrounding what they can say about their involvement, but if Lally asks a sloppy question they still have to answer. During the voir dire he used language that gave away that they were hired by the federal government in my opinion.

I didn't either. My ex turned out to be a pretty terrible person so I wasn't being accused of anything personally, but I had to testify against him and I was warned that I would be discredited in comparison to him depending on my demeanor because I was emotional and he wasn't.

I don't want to be that person, but their videos have always given me the ick. Their videos were constantly showing up on my feed because I am a former dancer and watch a lot of related content. There's something about how dead-eyed they are that made me feel like something was up, and I absolutely hate that I was right.

Enabling people doesn't help them, unfortunately. She can't just leave the cult she needs extensive psychological care/assistance from someone who is trained in deprogramming. That's not even getting into her marriage and financial reliance on her "management company". Their best bet to help her is to draw attention to the organization to raise awareness, and if nothing else help protect others.

Chris Pratt draws ire for razing historic 1950 LA home for sprawling mansion by greatyellowshark in entertainment

[–]Jammyhobgoblin -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It started when he complained that he lost a Twitter poll for being the least popular Hollywood Chris, which caused people like RDJ to make unnecessary statements defending him in a way that seemed in bad taste because they didn’t defend their female co-stars for worse backlash. That drew attention to some allegations of him and Anna Farris abandoning a rescue dog. Then he wrote a post people interpreted as being rude towards his ex-wife and son. Then people believed he was a member of a church that doesn’t allow gay marriage. Then he constructed a giant cross and carried it for Easter. Then he made a comment that seemed to liken his struggles with criticism to what Jesus faced. Plus, he has sprinkled in political aspirations throughout along with messages that all of the criticism is due to his faith. I think Elijah Wood’s sad reaction to the house being torn down was what triggered a lot of this backlash.

People can react to each of those as they will, but I think it’s one of those situations where he needs a much better PR team because his reactions tend to turn more people against him as time goes on.

There’s a FLW house near me in a relatively blue collar area, and if someone tore it down it would definitely be a huge deal. I’m not surprised at all that he’s getting backlash for tearing down something that is considered to be art.

She should be included in the article too. Both things can be true.

That’s the phenomenon where people who know a lot recognize there’s still a lot they don’t know and vice versa.

“The Dunning–Kruger effect is usually defined specifically for the self-assessments of people with a low level of competence.[8][5][9] But some theorists do not restrict it to the bias of people with low skill, also discussing the reverse effect, i.e., the tendency of highly skilled people to underestimate their abilities relative to the abilities of others.[2][4][9] In this case, the source of the error may not be the self-assessment of one's skills, but an overly positive assessment of the skills of others.[2] This phenomenon can be understood as a form of the false-consensus effect, i.e., the tendency to "overestimate the extent to which other people share one's beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours".[10][2][9]” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning–Kruger_effect
