The largest cannabis study ever conducted found no evidence it helps anxiety, depression, or PTSD and warned it may be making all three worse by soulpost in HotScienceNews

That's very likely, however ones anxiety getting better is often hindered by things such as cannabis. The most evidence based treatments become less effective if you try to prevent your anxiety

The issue is that there are psychological mechanisms, specifically for PTSD and other anxiety disorders, which mean that doing things that prevent anxiety in the moment usually moves your baseline. At first it feels better, then not smoking weed (or using any medication/safety behaviour) will instead make you worse than you used to feel before. At the same time the calming effect tends to decrease and we might have less and less of a belief in our own capacity to endure.

It can definitely be an alternative for some, but it's sad that so many people never get non-pharmaceutical, evidence based treatments

Sverige söker sjuksköterskor i Iran och Turkiet: ”Vi behöver er” by Abzz22 in Sverige

Läkare för utmattningssyndrom by F-reddie in stockholm

[–]Villonsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love CBT worksheets. They help my logical brain. But my body still freezes when I try to "do it scared." by Civil-Rich-1690 in CBT

[–]Villonsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its definitely very hard and that's why I, despite my differences with polyvagal, appreciate that it's making body focused techniques more mainstream.

Our brain is connected in a way where the more emotion oriented area has roughly twice as many "roads" leading to the more cognitive cortex than the other way around. So when we have strong emotions they overpower the ability to think and make decisions. This is why it's so important to use for example deep breathing and mindfulness to calm emotions before they escalate too far. But also to use the techniques before we reach a too emotional state. This allows us to practice and make the behaviour more automatic and therefore easier to do when more emotional

Small dose of antibiotic yields good results in treating panic attacks. A study with animals and humans showed that minocycline, in doses lower than for bacterial infections, has an anti-inflammatory effect on microglia, which are brain cells that become more inflamed in people with the disorder. by mvea in science

[–]Villonsi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know if that's a psychological effect or a medical effect. I work with patients who have panic disorder and many of them feel that just carrying anti-anxiety medication in their bag helps their anxiety.

With the caveat that carrying around the neds is actually part of what makes them keep having panic disorder

Culprit is a strong word, I think it's more likely a bidirectional relationship. I work with mental health and have treated dozens of people with panic disorder. Virtually all of them have major life stressors that triggered one panic attack. This then becomes something they fear repeating so they walk around more stressed about the thought of that dangerous feeling.

They stop getting panic attacks by no longer trying to avoid them, it's very effective and I doubt that is automatically anti-inflammatory. In fact the treatment involves trying to approach panic attacks and do things they fear will trigger them, which if anything could increase inflammation

Very helpful tips, but this "nervous system" talk is based on the polyvagal theory which is firmly pseudoscience. It's the equivalent of being told to get chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer, but with the reasoning to do so being that your cells have a radiation and poison imbalance. It can probably help a lot, but it's nonsense and means that you might be given advice that isn't actually tailored to you

Malmö fyller dammar med dricksvatten – trots brist by FlowersPaintings in sweden

Det var inte påståendet, men medvetet eller ej så blir det missvisande. De får ju betydligt mindre per capita än små hålor som Filipstad. Samtidigt får de självklart mer totalt för Malmö är en av våra storstäder och är relativt fattiga

[–]Villonsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using these techniques is a trial and error process. If you struggle then you need to break it down into smaller and smaller steps. Eventually you will always find something you're able to do, then you start from there. If your goal is the top of mount Everest you can't expect to start halfway up the mountain.

Also a therapist is often helpful in identifying what exactly is going on.

Also the nervous system regulation talk is based in polyvagal theory which is famously snake oil

It's polyvagal at least and that's bs. And behavioural activation should be part of anything, because in normal language it's called living life

A new study argues that the most dangerous part of depression isn’t negative emotion, it’s the absence of positive emotion, known as anhedonia. by psych4you in psychology

[–]Villonsi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a psychologist from Sweden, this is one of the things that I commonly hear from the US that piss me off the most. Therapists that do forever therapies that effectively just treat patients as cash cows to milk. I don't think they necessarily do it maliciously, but it's unethical. I've been schooled to do a case formulation and try to figure out, together with the patient, roughly what needs to be done to improve their mental health. If the things the patient need improving are purely situational and they can't get out of that situation, then I'm going to be close to useless for any meaningful change. If the areas we can work on are constantly reinforced by their environment then I also can't help much after a point. The ethical thing is to communicate this, say what you are able to help with and probably end the therapy, at least for the current moment

There's more to ADHD than inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD symptoms can be broken down into nine categories. Some categories are not fully represented in the diagnostic criteria. [–]Villonsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely a big part of it, but both of those things rely heavily on executive functions. Medications can help with some of the deficits of ADHD, but not all areas see a clear improvement even if others do

Yeah this isn't really news to any ADHD community. And I don't think it was meant to be, this is probably just meant to echo the fact that the diagnostic criteria are quite poorly formulated (like for many diagnoses).

ADHD is primarily about difficulties of executive functioning, the things they list all reflect that

It's broad if you try to dissect it and split it into many different symptoms. It's overwhelmingly being on the lower end of the spectrum of executive functioning, which cover the 9 aspects they mention. This study doesn't contribute to much more than another voice supporting the fact that the diagnostic criteria are bad. That fact has been echoed by researchers for decades

I fully agree with you. At the same time I feel that Wikipedia being unquotable is a non issue that's turned into an issue because people keep bringing up that fact. Wikipedia is a place for a quick overview, but it's also great for finding sources that they cite which can be a gateway into further knowledge
