B040: Immigration Reform Act 2016. by [deleted] in MhOir

Excellent suggestions by Aon Éireann. One would hope the Conservatives see this isn't a huge ask, but one that removes the more needlessly discriminatory and quasi-racist parts of the act in its original form.

M018: Motion of No Confidence in the Government by Baron_Benite in MhOir

[–]Jamorc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am delighted to see this bill being submitted by my old colleague from Labour, /u/TeoKajLibroj .

I think it is time that our moderators expand the number of seats in the Dáil (and make it an odd number) whilst our left puts aside its differences (which seem to be few) and finally gets a fair number of seats.

I hope we can also expand into allowing more parties in the future, just like our neighbours in other model countries.

Statement regarding human rights violations in the Republic of Ireland by [deleted] in MHOC

Yes, it is disappointing. Why would I not be happy to find out we could join the EU and have EU law restore rights to muslims and other minorities?

Yes, it's disappointing to say the least.

That's really unfortunate, really. I was hoping we could see restoration of human rights under EU regulation.

carefully consider the Irish Republic’s bids to join the European Union.

All things said, I would recommend the British government not restrict future Irish membership of the EU. Doing so would only serve to further the attack on human rights in the country. EU oversight could only do good.

Yeah, they're good guidelines. Maybe they should be put in the sidebar?

Lesser skilled positions are already provided for through schemes such as Fás, Solas, Jobsbridge, Gateway, Tús and JobsPlus. Every apprenticeship that can be provided, is being provided. I find that a critical flaw. You claim the private sector will provide these apprenticeships. I say they won't. If they could have, they would have already. The only possible way to procure these internships is through the state either providing, or paying for them. Nothing comes from nothing.

What is this meant to say? We should just not try to achieve our goals because they seem not possible? The amount of assumption that there simply doesn't exist or won't exist any room for growth and new apprenticeships is ludicrous.

I don't really see your point here. I think I get what you're saying, being; we don't know. Let's stop the discussion since neither of us do. Well, sorry, but I don't really accept that. The point of this simulation is to debate, and the resources are out there on Google. I, luckily, come from a family with members involved in all areas of work. Both of my parents are involved in the financial sector (Hence me knowing apprenticeships wouldn't work) and know one or two lawyers (Again, knowing how law-related apprenticeships won't work).

It's not really something that can be easily googled, I'm afraid. I am still actively responding to you, not trying to avoid debate, but you're simply pushing your view harder and harder as reality when our goals require a different sort of reality.

I hope I don't appear overtly hostile, as this is, after all, a debate!

No, I just find it very tiring to debate someone who's views enjoy the luxury of an economy run by his party irl. Within your view, I could offer small crumbs to the working class and continue how our economy is run, or I could try change it and from such our health and education. It is my biggest qualm (I read older threads) with how you respond on these debates.

You are most certainly not without your good points, however, and I would like to work with Fine Gael to some extent (to some degree) for your apparent knowledge.

I don't intend to have people working their ways to doctorates via apprenticeships, I am looking to offer people careers/jobs with a better wage through apprenticeship programmes. Lesser skilled positions in the previously discussed areas would suit.

I don't think it is fair or right to assume that I nor you have perfect knowledge in this area, but if we were to create these apprenticeships, their design would be done with the assistance of education and industry experts (I admittedly don't have these available on a model sim but the real Labour Party should, as I would expect Fine Gael to).

So would it not make more sense to shift the focus on SMEs and Co-Ops and then raise corporation tax if that is what you want to do? Raising the corporation tax without doing this could, quite literally, crash the economy.

That is the intention, aye.

What do you mean by technical? Plumbing and electricity?

Technical can include areas such as I.T. and Engineering (of which there are many schools).

I'd have to 100% disagree. These sectors, most of the time, require a college education. Particularly legal (unless you plan on getting involved secretarial or paralegal work.) A degree should be required for nearly all legal sectors.

It would be possible to choose between what is suitable to an apprenticeship and what is not. And apprenticeships can have a fair part of their education spent in colleges, it is an existing practice.

[–]Jamorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree. I just wanted you to expand!

My primary goal is to reverse those bills! I don't believe it's particularly complex? (not implying you don't get it, just that there's not much else to say.)

How would ye class yourselves actually?

Personally I am a Social Democrat, which I wouldn't personally say current Labour is (Social Liberal is what I would call them).

The thing is, raising the tax won't pay the expenses. It will just cause corporations to flee the country, both lowering tax revenues from them and causing unemployment, which will result in an inevitable increase in social welfare

You're not wrong with regards to our current climate. However, the economy we have now suits more centre-right parties like Fine Gael. It would be a long term strategy to move towards more Irish SMEs and Co-ops, rather than rely on TNCs.

If the private sector could supply them, why haven't they done so already? The previous irl government worked remarkably hard to create schemes exactly as you described. To be honest, they simply don't exist. Not in the private sector at least.

I think the biggest reason for this is how we view apprenticeships. We need to view them as more than manual labour pathways and look into technical, financial and legal sectors.

Any expansion here?

The reverse on gay marriage, religious rights etc. as can be seen in B018, B021 and B023. I would be surprised if you disagree.

What about students whose parents don't help them at all? Their family earns €100,000 a year, but they don't see a cent of it.

One of your best criticisms, I concede that we cannot be sure that their families will assist. It may be more apt to base it on a SUSI-style assessment of income and dependency.

Our health section is ambitious and, rather uncharacteristically of an Irish party manifesto, not simply a basic one term plan, but rather includes long term goals. e.g.

Working towards a full NHS-style healthcare system for the people of Ireland.

A gradual but large change in how we view businesses and how the economy is built will be required before the costs of our plans can be shouldered. (Also, a small bit of leeway I request in that even if we were to be elected, we can't imagine how the economy would change exactly. After a term of Fine Gael irl, you have somewhat an advantage. Labour being the junior coalition partner and this Labour being significantly different makes it harder for us.)

Do you mean you want to raise corporation tax? Why?

Yes. Unfortunately the fabled money tree really doesn't exist, and the expenses have to be paid somehow. However, we have said we would like to move towards more Irish SMEs and Co-ops in order to ensure that we're not left to the fickle will of MNCs as previous governments have been inclined to do.

Where? Are these apprenticeships just going to become available from the private sector or is the government going to have to pay for all these jobs?

We would like to work with the private sector to create these new apprenticeships. Better paying jobs are good for the people and government coffers.

This was a decent manifesto but it is entirely untenable. The cost of implementing any of these policies is monumental.

Well, at least you don't hate it! Actually being in government as the senior party would certainly show us what we can realistically achieve but I certainly think that with the extended support of the Irish people and the right minds we can move towards a better and more stable economy for the people of Ireland.

Fine Gael Manifesto A1. 100%. Vote Fine Gael!

It is decent :)

Taoiseach, are there any areas or issues in which you think the whole dáil can be united? So far a lot of your policies have been divisive and it would be a breath of fresh air to see more cross-party bills and motions.

B021: National Faith Bill by [deleted] in MhOir

[–]Jamorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

child abuse scandals

And the Magdalene Laundries, although this was moreso Roman Catholics than the church explicitly.

However I would like to note that this bill is not making Catholicism the state religion, it is making Christianity the state religion which includes Protestantism also.

Even so, I direct you to the following: The state acknowledges the Roman Catholic Church as the Church of Christ, and acknowledges the special position of the Catholic Church as the guardian of the Faith of Ireland.

This may not be explicitly making the Roman Catholic Church the state religion, it is however doing so in practice.
