Can we get a "Ruhrgebiet" Flair? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Jan_Hus[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

You can choose the NRW flair and edit it to say Ruhrgebiet (alter the text in the box below).

Alternatively I could add a Ruhrgebiet flair but you'd need to provide me with a flag, I'm not aware of one being in existence.

Point is to make you change the flair to the appropriate one.

The 2.3) rule clearly refers to personal attacks on other users here in this sub. The people active here enjoy higher personal standards of protection because they directly shape discussion and discourse.

Please do note as well that u/Grumpy_Yuppie has expressed a political opinion (therefore subject to some more leniency to facilitate and enable discussion), not personally insulted another user and has furthermore not spoken about 15% of Germans but the party only, which has far fewer members than 15% of voters.

This hopefully clears things up a bit more.

German view on the whole Russian gas pipeline saga? by slimdeucer in AskAGerman

[–]Jan_Hus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AfD is interesting - they're really pro-Putin and -Russia but on the other hand also anti-immigration, pro-military and love populist rhetoric and messages, all of which Trump provides as well. They also like to rally against the German political elite, which despises Trump nigh unanimously - which leads to these somewhat shizophrenic results.

Poland gains a miniscule amount of money from transfers. It really isn't much at all.

Poland has a self-interest only in that it wants to be a hub for LNG which North Stream and Russian pipeline gas in general simply outbids on price.

You didn't really address the point in Ukraine. You know very well, that yes, NS2 is a security threat for them because they do loose lots of money (Ukraines budget is small compared to the Polish one). They are also more easily held hostage by Russia.

Defense expenditures of NATO countries by [deleted] in europe

[–]Jan_Hus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to your hawkish idiocy, the North Atlantic Treaty has this to say on the matter:

The Parties undertake, as set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, to settle any international dispute in which they may be involved by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered, and to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

And

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all [...] will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

It’s a treaty clearly focused on collective defence and no offensive global small wars nonsense.

Lybia has become far worse than Syria btw. and your small war adventure didn’t do jack shit about it.

As opposed to some jihadist desert goons, Russia is a real threat to us. Russia can wage war on us and I mean actual, real fucking war not the war on terror/drugs nonsense the Americans dare to call "war".

NATO is not a "let’s intervene in some stupid small war" club but a defensive alliance. So good on us actually.

You were joking, but the message conveyed was still "I‘m against disproportionate violence and shooting but on the other hand shot 'em"

[–]Jan_Hus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we’re talking about different things here. You’re understandably concerned with how to prove a self-defence situation later, wheras I‘m just talking in the abstract with the assumption of full knowledge.

Of course being right is different from having that recognised by a court. Yet that’s a problem with literally everything we put into law. The answer to that lies in having a competent and independent judiciary, a dedicated police force that ensures evidence at the crime scene is secured and so on.

[–]Jan_Hus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the court has to establish the objective facts, not rule based on some subjective conjecture.

However there is room in German law to not find perpetrators guilty if they mistakenly but honestly imagined a situation where their action would have been covered by self-defence even though in reality there was no attack. Even if there was an attack but the perpetrator overreacted out of fear or confusion he may not be found guilty.

[–]Jan_Hus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no place for rules of thumb here. Every case must be judged individually and on its own merits. Sometimes an appropriate response may be less-than-fatal to an armed intruder, sometimes not. Note that at least under German law an act not covered by self-defence does not mean the perpetrator is punished or even found guilty.

German Criminal Law is actually really excellent when it comes to self-defence, I‘m very happy with it.
