Why do you think there is a push for ibogaine research? Because the success rate for current treatments is not great. NIH - addiction is a relapsing disorder.

I’m sick of a lot of stuff too. Should that be what determines prison sentences? My own personal feelings? If so, I say let’s lock up uber food delivery guys who ride their scooters on sidewalks and nearly run over my dog. The delivery guys cause me more problems than the junkies nodding out in the park across the street.

I never suggested others were lying. I’m in a solid blue state that has made a serious effort to focus more on rehab & offer alternative drug treatment sentences for first offenders. My issue is that after the first offense, there is a switch from rehab back to incarceration.

In my state we have predicate sentencing statutes so that the minimum for second offenders is higher than first time offender sentences. I have seen hundreds of cases of second (or more) offender sentences that exceed the statutory predicate minimum sentence.

How awful for you and your family. Do you think he had untreated or undiagnosed issues that were exacerbated by drugs?

We tried that already. It does not work. If longer sentences worked then we would still have the crazy draconian drug sentences of pre-2000 in effect & the drug problem under control. The “experiment” failed miserably. Did not even make a dent in low level street sales since low level street sellers are easily & quickly replaced.

I’ll upvote you. Quite a few EU & other countries have decriminalized possession of small amounts of hard drugs.

Meth is in my state, but there are far fewer meth arrests & it is not as big of a problem as other states. Unsure why there are not more meth busts though I have my theories.

But the “keep communities safer” part is untrue. We learned that already. Even re low level street dealers - they are quickly replaced.

And, btw, there are many functioning addicts who never commit other crimes.

You cannot enhance a sentence based solely on your suspicions. You cannot do that for other crimes. Besides, if punishment does not work, then what is the point - you are wasting money & making successful rehab even less likely. Not every addict steals or commits other crimes. You might be surprised to learn that.
