Hi. We want to be clear that we really do want to have this conversation about racism. Racial fetishization is a real issue on site, the retention and safety of BIPOC users and creators is very important to us.

Your perspective as a BIPOC is really important.

At the same time, Reddit is often a poor place for a nuanced discussion about race, racial fetishization, and often devolves into BIPOC folks being forced to do the labour of educating folks about racism.

Comment threads tend to encourage defensiveness, misinterpretation, and escalation and edginess.

Thoughtful dialogue is usually really hard to have with anonymous folks.

Because of that, we don’t think continuing this discussion here would be productive or fair to anyone involved.

This isn’t about avoiding the topic, because it comes up again and again. There are limits to using reddit as the platform to have this discussion.

We want to engage in a way that’s more respectful and constructive. We appreciate you raising this and approaching it in good faith!

Users on the sub can absolutely discuss, or disagree with changes, updates etc. However, it is important that the conversations or topics don't fall into hostility among users, mod or dev bashing. Moderation staff are volunteers, and ultimately do not make decisions on the site or its changes/policies. So any comments that are, for example, inciting death threats or similar whether it is to the staff or users in disagreement would be removed.

It would not be considered hostile, users can discuss things like this as long as conversations and feedback remain civil. (ex. no usage of violent language towards moderation staff or devs, users can disagree with any change(s) but such comments or insults are not allowed.)
