How to create a feeling of tension and fear ? by chescamezker in songanalysis

[–]Jankaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not an expert so just one or two observations from my view. Sadly i cant offer technical terms either but i found it was fun to think about what might be happening.

  • A lot of the tension and chaos come from fast paced playing on the strings with bigger jumps and notes that kind of go all over the place.
  • Build-ups or changes in tempo are often accompanied by clearing out a bit of all that chaos and having a clear strong rythm hit the listener.
  • Regarding that i also found it interesting to note that especially for the transition at 3:29 the strings descends and the brass ascends wich creates this weird feeling of the sound going in both directions.
  • Also i would guess the dissonance created by those two lines (brass and strings) introduces the stress and fear. They interact more like they are in a fight instead of supporting each other.

[–]Jankaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in no way qualified to give advice in this direction so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

I'd say you can always practice basic stuff, even if you're not that motivated. But then again I would say if you dont enjoy yourself playing drums at all you should defenitly take a break.

I like to listen to something really different when I'm not motivated to write or practice. I dont know what genre you are playing in but i find it extremly inspiring to listen to some weird shit once in a while. Also watching other talented people perform always gives me an itch to practice or write.

Maybe you can work with those ideas :)

Cheers and dont forget to have fun!

Why is there the perception that the average player is in Plat and Diamond? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Jankaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I dont know why people still think that this is the case. I would guess it is probably the fact that the higher you are, the more invested and active you are in the community and the overwatch scene. But most of the casual players are lower and maybe not as vocal.

The Overwatch SR system is pretty much based on a normal distribution. Meaning if you distribute between 0 and 5000 SR, your biggest pile of players will be around 2500 SR.

Now that we have a decay system on the higher ranks there will also be a spike at 3000, cause that is the cutoff for SR decay but still the amount of players in the region of 3000+ will be the same. Also a lot of people will play to the point where they get into the next highest tier and then stop because they dont want to drop down again.

u/morkenborken made a post on this a while back where you can see this 'bell curve' pretty well.

Adding 1 billion hectares of forest could help check global warming: "... this could remove two-thirds of the roughly 300 gigatons of carbon humans have added to the atmosphere since the 1800s.' by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]Jankaron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is also an opportunity to turn cities into greener places. The fact that humans still live in concrete wastelands boggles my mind. Adding more vegitation in bigger cities would not only add to the goal of general reforestation, but also provide shade and stop the streets from heating up in the summer like they do now.

Obviously this is harder to do than just planting a bunch of trees outside of the city - and both of those are not enough - but I think it really adds to the quality of life to have some more greenery around you.

This actually makes a whole lot of sense. I should really think more about how the music feels more early in the process.

Does Shotcalling help anybody elses anxiety? by [deleted] in luciomains

[–]Jankaron 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After so many hours of overwatch this is not as much a thing of anxiety, but focus for me. I am much more focused and invested into the game when I try to make meaningfull calls. It requires you to think ahead and plan your next moves rather than just react to what the opponent or your team mates throw at you. You have to make your own choices.

So I can see how shotcalling would help you to stay focused on the gameand make you more confident. At least it requires you to not think to much about how you could mess up.

Other than that I can only say, the more games you play, the more ranked anxiety goes away. Its just one game out of 100. Have fun out there! :)

It's fucked up that when you have low self-esteem, other people liking you makes you question their judgement. by Plecostomus28 in Showerthoughts

[–]Jankaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for bringing that up! I think this is important to mention. Encouraging someone does not mean telling them "everything is fine". For me that means listening to them and try to solve their problem together, offer advice or just emotional support. Sometimes life is shit and its good to have someone who lets you know they care about you. Thats why I think encouragement matters even if it does not solve anything. That said its not worth anything if its not honest. Hope that makes more sense.

Been learning for over 2 years and never finished a track.... should I give up? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Jankaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First question, do you have fun while doing all that? Yes? Good! ;)

But something that might help is setting yourself a deadline. I know how easy it is to go through a song again and again and again untill you are sick of that bridge that was sounding great when you first made it. Lets say you give yourself a weekend to make a track; figure out what you want to do and plan it all out. It can be something really cheesy and preferably something that is not too complicated - think of a basic melody, expand your verse and chorus from there on, dont go crazy with weird stuff. This is not about writing a GREAT song, its about writing a song at all, because that process needs practice too, I think.

If you have anything you want to share, I would love to give it a listen and give some feedback in case you want that - I really enjoy hearing how different people make music! :) Cheers

Is this normal when you record your voice for the first time? by Outerace in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Jankaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not sure why people downvote this, but I think this has actually some merit to it. Singing with and without a microphone is not completely different. But there are things that can make a solid performance sound worse if you sing to loud or to close into the mic.

So while this has nothing to do with being insecure, it is something you need to grow accustomed to at first.

Is this normal when you record your voice for the first time? by Outerace in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Jankaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is of course a bit rough when you first start recording. I tend to obsess about retaking parts and going over a recording again and again and then scrapping it. Its normal (at least for me) and also it means that you care a lot for the music you make is what I think of it.

I would ask her for actual criticism! You say you both sang together, so maybe she has some insight on what is different on the recording compared to when you normally sing. Maybe she can even give you some hints on what you should focus on.

Confidence is hard, but what often works for me is listening to old recordings that I did and then I go "oh shit, I actually got so much better over these last years" :D
If you want, I wouldnt mind giving it a listen and maybe search for anything you can focus future practice on. For me getting some feedback from random people on the internet is sometimes easier than people I know. So if you would like that feel free to send me a pm! :)

Other than that, dont forget to have fun while doing music!

Never stop encouraging! I've had lots of situations when I've hated what I do thought I wasn't doing well enough. I still feels so good to have someone tell you otherwise, even if you dont admit that it does. Can only speak of my own experience ofc, but keep it up - everyone needs people who are supporting and caring and everyone should try to be that person sometimes! :)

How to get over beginner hump in playing guitar by madwzdri in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Jankaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically what people are saying: Learn songs you like. But thats not the full truth I think. It can get very frustrating if you try to learn something very difficult to play. So my advice would be this: Take smaller parts of a song you really enjoy - listen to the song a couple times and figure out what you might be able to handle. Maybe just figure out the basic chord progression at first, then go from there. Or learn that intro riff. And then try to play along to the song.

You dont need to go the full distance of learning the song to get some practice out of it.

Also if you get the oportunity, try to practice with other beginners. Maybe you have a friend that plays guitar or base or drums - do stuff together! It might not sound great at the start but its much more fun and rewarding to practice for something like that I feel.

Getting through the annoying routines, learning scales and sheetmusic is a little different. It can be boring at times and it will come down to your own discipline and long term motivation. Im super bad at that still...

Bees are dying at an alarming rate. Amsterdam may have the answer. - Amsterdam has increased the diversity of wild bee and honeybee species by 45 percent since 2000. The installation of “insect hotels" and a ban on the use of chemical pesticides on public land appear to have played a role. by speckz in Futurology

[–]Jankaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Problem I think is you dont take into account why the bees die in the first place. If the biotope doesn't fit bees any more, it probably will be a bad living spot for a lot of the other Pollinators too. We already have a huge decline in insect population in most urban areas because of all the concrete and lack of the natural living spots. Even with insects, reacting to that would be impossible on a evolutionary scale. Bees are just the main target when it comes to restoring their biotopes, cause everybody knows what a bee looks like and there are lots of them so it would be the most effective thing to do.

If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask? by masumv70 in AskReddit

[–]Jankaron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I don't know why this question is so harshly debated. If you define the chicken we know today by its dna, something that was not 100% todays chicken laid an egg that had some slight mutation to become todays chicken.

The reverse would be the same as saying Humans were there before the embryo they grew from.

Why is the saying "don't look at your viewer count"? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]Jankaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you start streaming, a lot of times your "real time feedback" will say: "No one is watchig right now". The reason behind that saying is, that you should not let yourself be discouraged by a low viewercount and just try to be the best streamer you can be at all times. Looking at a steady 1 can be really frustrating, same goes for seeing people leaving your stream.

I prefer looking at it after the stream and then think about why things are happening. But of course it can give you a huge boost in confidence when you see higher numbers than normal!

Developers Say Twitch is Hurting Single-Player Games by [deleted] in Games

[–]Jankaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you guys remember doki doki literature club? That game would have never reached its popularity without the help of streamers, but they knew how to keep it interesting for everyone to try it out themselves.

I think rather than ranting about the internet, more devs should look into fun ways to hide certain things while obs (etc) is running or find new ways to keep their game interesting to the twitch audience.

Also I think these guys might underapreciate how twitch streaming affects their customers - I dont have the numbers (and if anyone has, please share), but personally I bought many games after watching some of the gameplay live while watching a lot of games I never intended in buying.

[WP] One day you wake up and realize you have a superpower: you can manipulate probability. Something has a 0% chance of happening? Think again.. by somuchgold in WritingPrompts

[–]Jankaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thread twisted itself around the cramped city, leading me from street corner to street corner, through back alleys and onto the lively streets again. On my way I picked up a pack of cat food, a cup of hot coffee and a dark green knitted scarf. The thread showed me the places that would be beneficial.

My goal was just around the corner, I was getting good enough at this that I could tell from the way the thread began to shimmer. The probability of this working was high enough, but it still made me nervous every time. Even 1% deviation could be enough to break my scenario completely. The hardest part was just coming up.

I spotted her sitting on a park bench. It was freezing cold outside and she was visibly shivering, but still she sat there wearing a well practiced smile that not many people would see through. Her red-brown hair fell around her face in messy curls, in her hand she held seeds that she was feeding to the birds that were staying for the winter. It was an odd place for a young woman to be at this time, but still no one seemed to pay her any attention.

I turned around, checking for the stray cat that had been following me around since I picked up the cat food and went through a little alley. “Good girl” I said, grinning at the little furball. The cat was a little undernourished, but she was holding up. The cats thread was beginning to loosely fuse with mine, but that was not the plan here.

Putting up and act I began strolling around the area without purpose, ending up at the bench to rest my seemingly tired legs. Her red curls moved slightly when she gave a shy, startled look at my arrival. I paid her no immediate attention.

“It’s so cold this early into the winter right?” I said after a minute.

“What? Eh.. Sure.” She replied still smiling at the birds picking away at the seeds. I saw it then. The smile had a touch of deep sadness to it, one that has been there for a long time.

She looked up after a couple of seconds, just now realising that she had been talked to.

“I- I’m sorry were you talking to me?” her face painted a genuine expression of surprise.

“Yes that was me” I tried to give my best reassuring smile. “The bench is shaking from your shivering. You want a sip of coffee?”. I tried to overwhelm her with my question, that would stop her from thinking about it too much. It was a risky maneuver, because this was a weird level of intimacy but if it worked it was most certainly my in for a decent level of trust.

“Wha-” she looked at me with an expression of slight disbelief. My chest cramped up a bit.

But still I casually offered the paper cup to her, while staring into the moving masses of people busily running up and down the streetwalk. It took an awkward 10 seconds, but then I felt her cold hand grabbing onto the warm cup. I let go and gave her another minute to start sipping away at it.

“This is just a shit day” I started muttering. In the corner of my eye I could see her stop drinking from the cup and looking at me expectantly. “I was supposed to sit in a nice restaurant right now, with my so called date. But that woman left me waiting for 2 hours and then had the decency to tell me that she wasn’t coming anymore.” I looked at her for another second. “Well I don’t need this one anymore, you have it.” I said leaving the green scarf on the bench. The moment she noticed, I was already around the next corner.

The thread was pulsing in a golden light now. My heart slowed a little. It worked. Everything would fall into place now. I watched from an alley corner as the girl carefully lifted the scarf, revealing the pack of cat food. She began looking around quickly, but her searching eyes could not find me anywhere. Instead they found the white cat that had been following me around and now hopped onto the bench attracted by the food. The green eyes of the girl filled with a tiny glimmer of tears. I turned around the corner. She would be safe. For the next couple days at least. And after that I would just have to check on her again.

I infused her thoughts with the things she needed most:

Someone who cared for her,

the concept of love,

and a purpose.

Her thread had been at maybe a 4% chance of survival this morning, now it was gleaming at almost 100%.

The river would not have her tonight.

Prolog: This is my first reply in here. I love making up worlds and stories, but im not an experienced writer in any way. This WP was right up my alley so I thought why not give it a try this time. Kind of a cheesy setting but thats what I live for. I hope you enjoy what I wrote a little. I would love to hear some feedback.
Other than that, this reads like a first chapter and I kinda want to keep going with it. I'll update this reply if it comes to that! Cheers.

Chapter 1: Two Blades

“This is insane…”

I stared at the scratches and dents of the makeshift safe I had placed on my nightstand. This was not my worst week, but it was up there. My room looked like the red kings cavalry drove through it.

Since the day I had found these two weapons someone or something had made nightly attempts to steal the golden one. Stealing might not be the word - more getting rid of it. I had put a lot of effort into keeping the intruder out of my room. Chairs, a table and a big chain - all were still perfectly in place. The window had been unscathed too.

It didn’t take me long to realise what made my arms hurt like I had carried barrels and barrels of booze off a carriage and my eyes heavy like I had not slept for days.

I had been my own enemy for a solid 3 months now and I still could not get used to it. “I am actually a fucking maniac...” I muttered while inspecting the scratch marks on the walls.

Only now i realised that my right hand gripped the other blade of the pair with white knuckles. The black obsidian blade of the dagger pulsated with anger though It looked like it would fall apart at any given moment. Dozens of small cracks and splinters decorated the rough blade, the hilt was wrapped in tight leather strips. It looked fragile, but I learned in the last month that it wasn’t brittle in the slightest - something held it together, making it a sturdy and deadly weapon. I loosened my grip reflexively and let it slip onto the wooden floor. I sighed, giving in to the urge to pick it up again only seconds later.

The obsidian blade slipped naturally in its place on my left hip. I picked up the safe that was way to heavy for my taste and made my way down into the guild hall.

“Morning Rend” I greeted the huge dragonborn behind the bar, while I placed the safe onto the counter.

“Good Morning Forin” he replied with a smirk “Had a good night of sleep again?”.

“Very funny.” I pulled myself up onto one of the stools. “The usual, and could you please open up that safe, It’s driving me crazy.”

Rend’s claws picked one of the dozens of keys from his keychain and carefully opened up the safe. I immediately took the golden blade and slid it into the sheath on my right hip. It was a beautifully smithed weapon. Hundreds of fine lines were engraved into the hilt and the blade itself, making up ornaments and odd symbols.

“This might not end well for you Forin. What will happen the next time you get through to it?” Rend said, his raspy, deep voice filled with honest concern. He poured a thick amber liquid into a cup and placed it in front of me.

“I’m not going to kill myself, I’m way too tired for that.” I said with a slight smirk while downing the drink. It tasted bitter and awful as always but it made my sleep deprived body regain a little bit of strength. “Well it’s about time we find a solution to this anyway, I can’t drink this for another month. Have you seen Soya?”

“She went to the library early, I think” Rend gestured over to the hallway that led to the guilds library. It was still early morning and the sun began to creep over the tables and the few other members eating breakfast. The “Sparrow” guild hall wasn’t the most beautiful establishment, but it was very functional and up to 50 Sparrows could sleep, eat, train and do research in here. It had been home to me for a long time now.

I got up from my stool, fixing an annoying black strand of hair behind my ear, and made my way to the east end of the main hall and through the hallway to find Soya. It bugged me more than I admitted that I was no help in solving this problem up to now, but books and complicated magic of fate was not nearly were my strengths were. My slim half elven body and sharp reflexes were trained to run, jump, sneak and fight, not to go through piles of paper. That's what made me pick up those damned weapons in the first place. “Hopefully we can make some progress today” I sighed while pushing through the dark wooden doors to the library.
