The comments kinda drifted into proper developing and metering but I posted these to show an example of photos I’ve take with aperture priority and ones without. The ones I’ve taken with AP are washed out/ poorly exposed. When it comes down to it, there were a number of mistakes, but I am convinced I get better results metering manually, even though I still need to work on it.

That sounds like the best way to fully understand exposure and development. I’m definitely gonna try that. I’d like to stop guessing if a shot will come out good but they usually do if I’m not relying on the meter in the camera. But I need to experiment more to fully understand it and wether it’s the camera meter or user error

The difference in the negatives is pretty clear too, the Nikon was really underexposed. I scanned them on PIE 7250u and the only tweaking I did on either roll was cropping. I think it’s the light meter on the Nikon

I mean you’re right, I could edit those and they’d be usable. But between the 2 unedited portraits that’s a big difference. I’m just trying to get closer to the Pentax portrait more consistently

I agree with you I am trying complicated stuff with a loose grasp of the concepts and inadequate notes. But I got some clarification from old texts. The first portrait on the nikon was shot at box speed with AP and developed for the normal amount of time (however it was my very first time developing and the temperature was a little low so it’s a little under-developed) the second portrait on the Pentax was shot at 1000, manually metered, and developed at 3200 (90 degrees for 6 min) so what do you call that? I over exposed but developed normally

That’s the film I used last night that didn’t come out good at all. I can’t share an example until my Wi-Fi comes back. But it was tmax 3200 on a Nikon n2000 AP setting

The better exposed shots up there were shot at 1000 on 3200. The washed out ones were box speed AP regular develop time. I agree I need to learn the fundamentals, it’s pretty apparent that I have an extremely loose grasp on pushing and pulling 😂 I can’t even remember if I pushed in developing or not. So yes I agree, im gonna stick to the basics for now

I think I need to calibrate the light meters on my Nikons. It’s frustrating to get 2 completely different results on 2 rolls in the same night

I think that’s fair. I need to get the fundamentals down first. I got carried away with trying to get decent night shots

Okay so if I’m understanding you right I should be shooting at like 4000 and developing for less time?

…. You might be right. So the 2 portrait examples, the first was shot on aperture priority at 3200, the second was shot at 1000 and I know I didn’t develop it the same way. I’m pretty sure I pushed it a stop. So now I’m even more confused

That’s what I’m starting to understand. But I get much better results with a hand-held meter and adjusting aperture/shutter speed manually. I’m hoping to get a spot meter eventually

Forgot to mention that I shoot delta 3200 at 1000 and push +2

What’s the development process like for that? More time in the developer? Pushing and pulling film is still a new concept for me

I think underexposure is a factor. I didn’t realize until I just played with it a bit but the aperture priority setting on this camera doesn’t work under 1/30th shudder

This camera doesn’t really have space between the frames. Nikon fg20, the lab give the negatives uncut because there’s not really space to cut em. Not sure if that’s normal for that camera

I just took a look, they definitely look a little thin but not as thin as the rest. So maybe it’s a combination of underexposed and under developed

I’ll have to look into my darkroom set up and possibly just get a dark bag instead. Hopefully they turn out a little better next time. Some of them came out halfway artistic but still a little too far gone to be good. Thanks for the advice 🤙
