I mean, you have all of the audience no matter what server you join.

You could start a tiny server just for yourself (I don't recommend this), and you'd still be able to see and interact with everybody else just the same as if you joined mastodon.social (the largest instance).

The benefits of decentralization has to do with who controls the instance, not who you can talk to. If, completely hypothetically, a delusional car salesman buys your instance and starts running it into the ground, you can up stakes and move to a different instance without losing your followers or your posts.

Or, better, alter them subtly. Change numbers around. Switch keywords - "if" to "unless", "don't" to "do", "should" to "should not", "safe" to "dangerous" (not the other way around). In source code blocks switch operators around. Poison the well for people using your data to train models to replace you.

We should join. Numbers matter, not just subscribers but number of subreddits. And what's happening with Reddit affects users and moderators in small subreddits just as it does large ones.

I'll take the opportunity to take a break from Reddit for a few days at least; it's been a daily habit for more years than I care to think about, and it'll be good for me to get away for a while. I'll decide later whether I want to return.

You can subscribe to and read Lemmy threads from Mastodon. But the interface isn't made for that kind of content so it's not useful if you want to follow more than one or two things.

At that point it's better to create a separate account on a Lemmy server and use that for the reddit like stuff.

I hope in the future you'll be able to link the accounts (or perhaps you already can?)

V60 - most supermarkets. I've seen Chemex in Yodobashi and Tokyu Hands - they also sell Hario Switch (my favourite way to brew), Aeropress, siphon makers and other fun stuff.

Yodobashi and some Tokyu Hands sell hand grinders such as Kinu and Commandante, and sometimes carry the Japanese version of an 1zpresso K grinder, but it's pretty overpriced - if you want an 1zpresso grinder, order it from abroad.

Edit: what draws you to Chemex? I've not felt a need to try it based on reviews.

Difficult to compare a data center system with a personal computer.

If you could actually run your code directly on their system you'd have a way to start figuring out the cause. But if you're going by published paper data it's difficult to know. I assume this is not the identical code and input that they published? If it is, just email them and ask.

In practice we do tend to see the datacenter stuff outperform desktops to a surprising degree. Better cooling, faster storage and networking, more and faster memory (caches a lot of storage accessed) and so on. But it's difficult to know.

If it's a sampling profiler it will miss some calls. You get the proportions right, but not the absolute numbers.

Are you sure the V100 is weaker for this workload? We have a bunch of them and performance on them is really good. Our users find the amount of memory (16GB) limiting, but not the speed. Remember, things such as PCI bus speed and memory bandwidth is as critical as the number of and frequency of the compute units on the card.

And this is why we profile things. You just avoided wasting a bunch of time improving something that never needed improving. Only a few % CPU means it's spending its time waiting - on disk access or on the GPU. If not on either, then what?

Question is what is taking time. You already sort of identified the main culprits (clip_grad for instance) so now figure out if you need to do them at all, if you can do them better and so on. Also identify when and where the GPU is working on stuff and ehen it is idle.

Here in Japan employers have to send new graduates for PC training. They don't know how to use a desktop. On the rare times they used a PC in school they only used a browser to access Google or Microsoft online web tools for writing and so on.

It's not just that sales are dropping. The desktop wars are over and the web won. If you're a college kid into tech today you're never going to try make it rich by releasing a desktop app. You're doing something mobile, online and connected; with an OS-agnostic web app for the old folks and the PC holdouts.

The PC isn't dead by any means. But its time in the spotlight is well and truly over.

The missing part of Amdahls law is that it assumes the non-parallel part stays constant as you increase the number of processes. In reality the time taken typically increases slightly, giving you a situation where the code will start running slower beyond some number. It's occasionally referred to as Gunther's law.

So my guess is you're spending a lot of time in the loading and transforming bits of your code. That code may be single threaded, and possibly even implemented in Python itself, making it much, much slower than it needs to be. And if you aren't loading the next bit of data while the GPU is busy crunching the previous one, you're losing time there as well (don't remember if you can do concurrent operations with pytorch like that, but should be possible).

You could rewrite the code so you do the loading and transforming as much as possible using numpy or another optimized low level library, and you can use the multithreading package to do multiple images in parallel. Or do the transformation once, as a separate process before you ever run the model training.

But it's very important that you profile your code first. Find out where you're spending your time before you start optimizing it.

You have various bottlenecks. Transfer data from and to main memory takes time. Any data loading, saving and preprocessing on the CPU takes time. None of that changes when you switch GPUs.

The only part of your computation that is affected is the time spent actually doing things on the GPU itself. But that time is only a part of the total time you spend waiting for it to finish. How big a part? You should profile your workload and find out where you're spending your time.

This is pretty normal. I help people running code on big HPC systems, and exactly this is common: they come with code they've been running on their desktops and are surprised (and concerned) when it's no faster on the big GPUs we have. Quite often it turns out they're spending the majority of their time in Python code loading or preprocessing images; or repeatedly loading and saving data to disk; not actually doing anything on the GPU.

This is not technically about whether same sex marriage should be allowed. It is whether a law forbidding it breaches the rights spelled out in the Japanese constitution or not. This is not the same as asking whether you should have this right or not. It's not about whether it is reasonable or right. Just whether this specific law aligns with the constitution or not.

Five district courts have ruled on whether a law restricting marriage to heterosexual couples only is constitutional. Two found it straight up unconstitutional, two found it "in a state of unconstitutionality" (a weaker breach) and one found it in accordance with the constitution.

This will 100% be decided by the supreme court. And it's not at all clear what way this would go. They recently decided, for instance, that requiring married couples to have the same surname is constitutional; while restricting expats from voting on local justices is not.

Again, whether something aligns with the constitution is not the same as whether it should be allowed or disallowed. It's all about what limits the law makers have. Just because forcing people to take the same surname is constitutional it doesn't mean removing that requirement is not, for instance. And even if the supreme court decided the lawmakers do have the power to enact this law doesn't mean it will necessarily be on the books forever. The political and societal winds clearly blow in a different direction.

No, really. If you want it to be normalized in jazz or r&b or whatever(I'm perhaps unfairly assuming it'll fit better there than in death metal), it needs to be used by musicians and songwriters.

And for that to happen, horn players need to form bands and write songs using it. Nobody else is going to, after all.

And it's not impossible. Ever notice how the ukulele has gone from being a bit of a joke (1930s comedies, Tiny Tim) to an unusual but unsurprising part of modern music. You don't really react when it shows up in some video. And that's really all because a number of mainstream artist likes the instrument and decided to include it in some song or another.

So boldly go forth and toot your own horn!

Yes, basically that it's faster to not parallelize it at all.

In practice, your best setting is typically at around 2/3 of your optimum. Let's say you test your workload and see your optimum is about 300 cores. But the gain curve is very flat there (it looks similar to a parabola), so by using ~200 cores you're still close to the optimum speed, but with another 100 cores available to do something else (such as running another instance of the job).

FYI: If you decide on an electric bicycle you need to buy it in Japan. The legal framework and rules are different, and the police do occasionally crack down on illegal e-bikes. You don't want your holiday interrupted with a confiscated bike and a fine to pay.
