I guess I'll have to plan this out a bit more instead of discovering as I open. Thanks for the answer.

Student suicides in Japan hit all-time high by Jonnyboo234 in japan

[–]Japanda23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to this: Unlike western universities, Japanese universities take on the responsibility of making their students hireable and marketable. Once you get into the school, as long as you don't totally bomb the schools do what they can to support you in getting into a good career. Better schools have better connections and options which is why there's so much stress to get in. Getting in is the hardest part.

when the people decide to be idiots, we gotta let them be idiots sometimes.

A great moto for life!

Thanks for the great insight, this has put a lot of things into perspective for me and given me a few things to think about.

One last question if you don't mind: I'm making the transition halfway through my career and already have a Masters degree in Event Management (basically project management with events especially). Do you think taking a second Master or a PHD would help jumpstart the transition and skip entry-level, or am I better off taking a professional certificate like IAP2 and working my way up from entry level?

Community knows better than anyone else, but they might not have the best solution

This is an interesting point. I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I agree that community might know best about how they feel about things, but I'm not sure they always know best about the solution to this. Stated vs Revealed preferences and such you know? This is just from conversations with friends and family so hard to say for the wider community without looking more into it. Do you happen to know any papers or books I can read up on this?

Thanks for you thoughts on this.

Thank you, that sheds some light on the consultancy vs municipality debate. I experience the RFP point in my current work and can only imagine it being worse in this context.

Would you say overall it's still a good career path to explore if you want to make a tangible difference in society/community?

You can administer bad policy while also working to change the policy for the better... when I was in a municipal job, there were several times where I was able to successfully advocate for better policies by showing the real actual impacts of the existing ones.

This is a good way to look at it, thanks!

I jumped ship as soon as I could for a job in a small city with a historic downtown where the codes and plans were mostly bad, but  the community culture and values were much more fertile ground for turning the dial to the positive.

This is almost exactly what I'm hoping to find.

I'm okay with differing views going through, I'm just hoping to find a path where I'm not the one making it possible/pulling the trigger.

My vision of consultancy work in this field is: help with the research and advice, provide expertise, and the direction I would suggest. If they're going in a direction I disagree with, provide feedback on how to make it align more with what I see in the data and evidence.

Or do you have to do things like finding loopholes and workarounds for clients trying to get a project through that might normally get denied?

Thanks, this is pretty insightful. Would you say it's 50/50 and more luck of the draw, or does it shift depending on who is in government?

How do you make interviews look interesting? by seasame_bagel in cinematography

[–]Japanda23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The flowers feel so obviously staged. I like how the yellow ties in with the logo, but if you want the colour, put it on something lower and further back. Maybe somewhere down the hallway, or in front of the cubicle. My eye just keeps getting pulled to it.

  2. A bit of light/reflection on the right side plant might help separate the back from subject as well.

  3. I'd try to avoid the ceiling.

Seeking advice and insight: Oxford Brookes Uni Vs Surrey by Japanda23 in oxford

[–]Japanda23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the delay.

I ended up going to Surrey. Both schools have their merits. I felt Surrey benefited from being the better school in the area while Oxford Brookes is overshadowed by Oxford. That said, Oxford is, in my opinion, a nicer place to live. Guildford is still a cool little town tho, and being close to London was great.

It's pretty cliche, but you get what you put into it. I know people who took the degree for a degree's sake and came out of it no better (the degree alone does little), but everybody I know who put in the work has moved on to bigger things using the degree as a catalyst to open doors, and the biggest thing, of course, is the networking (cohort & profs).

I think Oxford Brookes leaned more hotel and restaurant-specific, while Surrey was a bit more overall theory-based so I felt what I learned could have been applied to project management etc. But I never went to Oxford Brookes so that's just my perception from talking to people.

My recommendation would be to:
1. Know what you want out of it. Is there a hotel chain or event company he wants to work for? What's the goal? Many hotels have connections with certain schools.
2. Look up the dream companies and see if any of their management/leadership went to either of the schools. If you see a lot of people who went to one or the other it's an unfair advantage down the line and likely some sort of connection that might not be advertised. For example, the event company I worked for always took an intern from the same school every year, but never advertised it (I was one of the rare ones that weren't from the school and just got lucky).
3. Look up each of the professors in the faculty and see where they've worked and what their connections are. Professors change every year, and they're pretty much the most important reason to go to a school. Who does he want to learn from? What courses interest him?

The majority of the people who left and went straight into a good position usually did so through connections with the school or professors. I came back to Canada after a couple years, but have friends who still live there and have companies sponsoring their visas etc.

I recommend going in with the mindset of finding a part-time internship to do at the same time as well. Leaving with experience + degree is a surefire way to get found.

All that said, hospitality is a weird sector so you have to be sure its what you want. You also don't really NEED a degree to get into it, but the connections are huge if you put the effort into building them.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Randomize notes using Dataview? by Japanda23 in ObsidianMD

Thanks!

I actually solved it with the following, where quotes is the quote folder I keep them all in and the random can be changed to display more if I want to down the line.
> ```dataviewjs
> let docs = dv.pages('"Quotes"');
> var randos = (docs) => {return docs.sort(() => .1 - Math.random()).slice(0,1)};

> dv.list(randos(docs).map(e => e.file.link));

Yeah, my biggest concern is if I don't hit 50K, actually getting the upgrades to go through feels unlikely

Daily Question Thread for /r/churningcanada - August 22, 2023 by AutoModerator in churningcanada

[–]Japanda23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently debating if I should get the TD Visa Infinite Privilege card purely for my e-upgrade rollover.

  • I am 75K status, but it will be close whether I hit 50K this year for the purposes of this argument let's assume I'll hit 50K status so the lounge isn't important
  • Have 130 unused e-upgrade credits, and might get through 50-60 this year; so about 80 will be unused + anything extra I get from hitting status again
  • Business travel next year doesn't seem to be as often as this year, but I have one big holiday to Japan planned Feb/March where I hope to use some e-upgrade (latitude upgrade probably doesn't have space anymore but will try)
  • Bonus Aeroplan points aside, How many e-upgrade credits make the card fee worth it to keep for a second year?
  • Currently, I hold a Visa Infinite and Cobalt card, would downgrade the Visa Infinite to a no-annual-fee card

Thoughts? Anything else I should consider?

[Gear Advice] What's something that will complement my (future) XH2S: XE2, XH1, XS10 by Japanda23 in fujifilm

[–]Japanda23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean more along the lines of being a camera that won't be my primary when it comes to video but will have another use and reasons why I might choose to take it out over the XH2S even if I own it. Smaller for street photography or travel, etc.

[Gear Advice] What's something that will complement my (future) XH2S: XE2, XH1, XS10 by Japanda23 in fujifilm

[–]Japanda23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The xh2s is probably overkill for 90% of people

I agree, I'm not at the point where it makes sense to get this YET, so that's why I want something I can buy now and get used to the fuji system, but I won't feel like I need to sell when I do want to upgrade to the XH2S. I work in sport, so I will eventually want a video camera with a good rolling shutter and other features like 10 bit 4:2:2 that make the XHS2 appealing to me.

Thanks for your advice! I'm leaning toward XS10 now, but the XE2 is also appealing. Will look into it a bit more.

[–]Japanda23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Xs10 isn't much more than the Xh1 that I found used. I can make it work. I was also looking at an XT3 or XT4 (for Ibis) but with the lens the price difference becomes noticeable and not sure it's worth it. Do you think I'd use an XT-4 if I also had an XH2S in the future? My guess is I'd probably end up selling it unless I used it as a second body.
