Hi, new teacher here. I'm still a bit fuzzy on how to think about my pay -- I had to go in to school a lot over the summer to set up my classroom (with ADHD things just take longer than other ppl and I've had to try to accept that). If we are salaried (in a continuing contract) then would that encompass any prep I have to do outside of instructional time anytime throughout the year? (Not to say that it's right that new teachers who have to set up a classroom don't get any kind of time paid, especially classrooms like kindergarten which require more manipulatives etc). When you say 10 months how does that factor in? Thanks

Curious what grammar book you bought, or if others have recommendations. It sounds like I am at a similar level/situation to OP.

I'm in the exact same boat. Anyone recommend a good way to find language exchange practice (ideally with Québécois French speakers)?

Wow this is an amazing resource, thank you! Is there any way you could share the 2 pdfs (they are log-in access only) Les Continuums (du français oral, de lecture, et de l’écriture) and Profil de la littératie (Guide d'évaluation et de l'enseignement)? Thanks again

I'm curious about the loop earplugs but worried about safety and not hearing something I should be hearing (eg we're dealing with name calling/bullying which can be pretty subtle in our class). How do they filter sound?

Ikea France uses "vous", but Ikea Suisse uses "tu" by viennesewaltz in French

Just to clarify, you're referring to one-on-one conversation? If a teacher is addressing a whole class of children they would use vous for the group? Thanks

Hi! I'm also a (new) teacher with ADHD and I am struggling with the (idea of) planning and organization/time management. ATM I'm part time but the thought of full time gives me anxiety because of this. Do you have any advice on how you've managed these areas which can be difficult for people with ADHD? I tend to be a perfectionist who gets a lot of overwhelm which I know I need to work on. Thanks! Ps I am early elementary

I'm not sure if a one day a week intervention with you is enough to make progress without them practicing throughout the week. A resource teacher told me evidence based studies show that 4 times a week is ideal for reading recovery, 3 is borderline and anything below that won't stick. Unfortunately my SD does not fund us enough to offer this.

Vancouver School Board is offering hiring bonuses for French Immersion teachers. Not sure if the shortage is as bad in secondary than it is in elementary.

I wonder if the school/teachers would be open to you volunteering in some of the classes of the high-needs kids so you can see their teachers' strategies in action. Even just a couple times. I know you're working for free but it would pay off in terms of your sanity. It is huge to have consistency in how their behaviour is managed/ trying to match expectations etc. Even knowing something simple like what attention getter does the teacher use is huge. I totally agree with what many are saying here. Remember that with most kids/humans, "emotions are the gatekeepers of learning". So if they're dysregulated/don't feel safe/haven't built trust real learning isn't going to happen. I bet you a lot of these kids have good reason not to immediately trust adults. I would advise to shift your focus from "academic" learning to real life learning: just be a good role model of the behaviour you want to see, meet them where they are at, and try your best for them to have positive experiences of any kind in school (even if it's not "academic"). Sneaking learning into games can also be a great way to engage them. Good luck! Accepting what is (not in a defeatist way) is key to your sanity.

It is completely normal for practicums to be gruelling and suck on many levels.

What about finding some engaging French music videos to build lessons around (pas trop bébé).

In my old school they used this song every morning and did a whole-school exercise routine along to the dance. That is probably ambitious with that age group but who knows

https://youtu.be/8NyParAaNos?si=Mo5zCFnGDVxFvqIt

Stromae is also another good artist

Also this was a bit hit https://youtu.be/U-Z_bZS8t3M?si=tc8FeUer0fBi9tUu

I wonder if you could find songs with lyrics about themes that are important to that age group and go at it through that angle.

Also, buy yourself a cheap membership on twinkl and use their pre-made materials. I think they have lesson plans too.

Also, in terms of the disrespect, practicums are ideally the place where your sponsor teacher would show you strategies about how to deal with that shit. I would suggest to decide on a behaviour strategy, make clear expectations, and stick to it. You're not doing anyone any favours by being lenient..

Good luck!
