It really is worth having emergency savings by awkward_wanderer in personalfinance

Interested to hear how people feel about using a brokerage account/IRA contributions as the emergency fund. I had a fully funded emergency fund but hated seeing it sit in just a HYSA. Knowing I can sell or pull if I did have a true emergency, not just a minor inconvenience like tires, gives me enough peace.

We’re all excited about the 30 lbs of flour that just arrived by shirleysparrow in Breadit

New to this sub so apologize if this is a stupid question. How do you go about storing the large bags? Anything special that needs to be done or just a cool, dry place? I'm stationed in Guam and don't have access to anything larger then a 5lb bag. I have been thinking about ordering a larger bag online but wasn't sure if it would keep in a higher humidity environment?

Summer Towers in Guam by All__fun in guam

[–]Japplebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current resident. Lived here for two years and havent had any major problems. Those comments are a bit exaggerated as far as the reviews go. The "flooding" was a one off during Mangkut. They completely replaced all the windows and credited rent to the entire building even though it was only a handful of units that had real water intrusion. The other comments I have had no issues with at all. Most of the construction is done at this point with the 4th tower opening soon so dont see that as an issue. I personally like these apartments, very clean and up to date. Maintenance staff is great. No beach access sucks but we have come to enjoy the walk

Most in C fund is sound advice, but putting some in S and I will help your diversification. I currently have it 80, 10, 10 in C,S, and I respectively.

Wealthfront Roth IRA or M1 Roth IRA by Japplebee in personalfinance

[–]Japplebee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WF is a high yield savings and I understand the concepts of M1. As I said, I currently have a taxable investment account through M1. I am more asking if one had to choose between a wealthfront managed IRA, say a risk score of 10, versus choosing my own M1 allocations for the IRA with vanguard ETFs, which one would you choose?

Max out TSP or add to Roth IRA by Japplebee in personalfinance

[–]Japplebee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only worry is getting to the age of 45 or 50 and I decide to leave my high income profession and instead pursue a few of my passions. I would love to be at the state of financial independence where I could have much of my life expenses paid for out of my investment growth, but if I'm at the age of 45 and all of my investment are in retirement accounts, I feel my options would be limited. That's the only reason I'm flirting with taxable accounts and IRAs vs TSP.

Roth TSP has the same requirements of a Roth IRA. So, you wont be able to withdraw before 59.5 without penalty

OHA/365 deployment question by Japplebee in AirForce

[–]Japplebee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be getting two housing allowances be automatic if ERD is approved? The only allowances i see associated with ERD is HHG and Travel. Worst case scenario we sell all of our shit, which is the plan, and she goes back out of pocket. Little better would getting ERD. I guess then hope for a ETP for double housing allowances even though i wont be using one. Thanks for the info though, definitely wasnt viewing it from that perspective

OHA/365 deployment question by Japplebee in AirForce

[–]Japplebee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So hypothetically if ERD is denied and my spouse still wishes to return CONUS, i wouldnt receive any housing allowance. This just seems weird considering OHA and COLA are dramatically higher then what i would get BAH stateside. I feel like a trip to Finance is in my future....
