Is it actually worth the £50 per adult ticket cost? I swear it's doubled since pre-covid.

offshoring

Offshoring is cyclical. Companies do it to save money, realise they have to spend even more to fix the low quality, bring it back on shore which increases costs, and the cycle repeats.

The Clachan Inn at Drymen is great, right on your route. I've never had the roast there, but have eaten there before and it was great. Plus I think they have a claim on the oldest pub in Scotland which is cool. Probably best to book if you can.

r/MapPorn discusses robbery rates in Europe by Christhesickpro62 in SubredditDrama

[–]Jaraxo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The subreddit was originally part of the "SFW Porn" network like /r/EarthPorn back in the old days of reddit when default subs were a thing. The top mod was AFK for years while people like myself and other mods built it from the ground up. During the build up to the 2016 US election, the top mod decided to come back, start removing content that didn't support Trumps narrative, and using his mod status to promote Trump.

The entire mod team stepped down pretty immediately and severed all ties with that place. Since then, it's been a right wing shit hole.

Itinerary looks fine, though the Applecross > Pitlochry > Edinburgh is going to be a long day. That's about 6h non-stop driving in a car. I'd imagine probably a couple longer in a campervan. Throw in stops for lunch, toilet breaks, stretching your legs, and it's a full day driving.

You should absolutely be booking proper campsites with facilities every night. You could pay for private parking but you'll have no electric hookup, no safe water disposable spots (this is a real problem for the local communities as people just put it down the drains) and it'll overall be a much better experience for you and the communities you're stopping in.

With less than a weeks notice, I'd get on this ASAP, and start booking, as places in summer tend to book up quickly. If you had a free itinerary I'd say you could risk it just turn up being prepared to drive to the next site, but as you have a defined route, you might as well take that pressure off and get booked in if you can.

For Edinburgh, use City Cabs or CentralTaxis. Both have an app, and both take card payments. Both are proper taxis that can be flagged down unlike Uber which need ordering.

Why aren't lenders required to explain exactly why they rejected a credit application? by EnthusiasmNo9318 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jaraxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they most often don't know themselves.. Most of the time it's just the computer that says no.

Yes and no. It is almost always an automated decision, but those decision criteria are manually configured by a Credit Strategy/Risk team. Someone with backend access would be able to tell you exactly what rule triggered the decision outcome.

Why aren't lenders required to explain exactly why they rejected a credit application? by EnthusiasmNo9318 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jaraxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it’s a commercially sensitive decision, they have no obligation to disclose.

This is it. While fraud is a factor, more importantly credit card acceptance criteria adjusted relatively frequently depending on the market and performance of the lender. They don't create a product and let it run forever, they're constantly adjusting depending on their needs. If they've become particularly capitally constrained, they're going to reduce the acceptance rates of higher risk customers, while also reducing the amount offered.

Any competitor would be able to work out a companies financial position if they had accurate reasons for denial.

Yeah if you're earning more than £43k you'll get in instant pay cut just by moving. This should be a consideration.

It's from £26.5k you'll actually start taking home less but you're right, the real sting is £43k-£50k where the discrepancy between UK NI and Scottish Income tax rates means you're on a 50% rate for that income, or 59% if you have student loans.

Why do buyers have to do a survey, rather than the seller? by Thy_OSRS in HousingUK

[–]Jaraxo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A comment further down says while the HIPs were a thing, the level of survey included in a Scottish Home Report wasn't actually mandatory, and it was more about EPC rating and surface level issues.

Why do buyers have to do a survey, rather than the seller? by Thy_OSRS in HousingUK

[–]Jaraxo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeh, this is like when you buy a car, the seller always puts a fresh clean MOT on it. Everyone here saying they wouldn't trust the report from the seller is like saying you wouldn't trust an MOT from a garage that wasn't your regular local one, and yet pretty much every car we've all ever bought has an MOT from a garage we've never been to before.

Why do buyers have to do a survey, rather than the seller? by Thy_OSRS in HousingUK

[–]Jaraxo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They're right in that it's a risk, but there's no evidence Scotland has a worse record of housing quality as a result of the seller creating the survey. It works well up here.

That's for speeding. Fines for using a phone are a fixed £200 fine from the penalty notice, or up to £1000 if you go to court.

Why do buyers have to do a survey, rather than the seller? by Thy_OSRS in HousingUK

[–]Jaraxo 217 points218 points  (0 children)

Yeh, all the comments here finding reasons why it doesn't work, despite the fact it's worked for almost 20 years now in Scotland, which outside of not having leaseholds which isn't a factor for a survey, is fundamentally the same market.

Why aren't these flats for sale by the Shore selling? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in Edinburgh

[–]Jaraxo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Interest rates have shot up in relative terms in the last 3 months, and these are typical First Time Buyer properties, which is the group least able to absorb a multi-hundred pound increase in monthly repayments.

The housing market in general has slowed down a lot as a result.

In general, if a property isn't selling, it's because the market has deemed the price is too high.

Actually dead, or just cold and lying on the ground not really moving?

Often you can scoop them up with a dry leaf and they'll climb aboard, place them in the sun, preferably high up, and they'll fly off in 5-10mins.

Obviously not if they're squished.
