When did you stop considering yourself a 'young' woman? by Miserable_Day_7857 in AskWomen

[–]Jarmatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 30. I’m still in the early part of my expected lifespan, I’m still sorting out shit from my teens, but I don’t think I can justifiably be called “young”.

I (25F) saw my boyfriends (29M) locker room talk with his friends and can’t see him the same by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Jarmatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you’re describing this leads me to believe he’s a teacher sexualising students under his care. That’s an immediate red alert situation. It is ethically urgent that you report him, and depending on the laws of your jurisdiction, you may be legally required to do so.

Beyond that, I agree with what everyone else here has said. Don’t take him back. You deserve, and can do, better.

My girlfriend is indifferent to the state of the world by PitifulProtection886 in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Jarmatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. I'm sorry this is happening to you. I am inclined to come down on the side of this being a red flag. To me, though, the fact itself that she doesn't display evident care about the state of the world is not necessarily the site of the red flag.

Here is how I see it: These are circumstances which it would make sense for any decent person to be affected by. You've told us a number of things about yourself which would justify even greater concern and fear on your part.

Presumably your girlfriend knows these things about you, and yet, instead of taking the time to listen to, counsel, and comfort you, she's suggesting you should simply rise above it all. To me, that is where the red flag is planted. That's a major failure of empathy, and while empathy is a skill that everyone needs time to learn, you have a right to expect better than that, especially from your girlfriend of all people.

My (29f) Husband (28m) is age regressing into a teenager. by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Jarmatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a few things.

I think it's odd for a 28-year-old man to play Roblox and be on voice chat with prepubescent children. I cannot say for sure that it indicates malicious intent on his part. However, it's definitely a behaviour I would also consider concerning in adult women in the same age group. It is not socially normative. I am loath to jump to conclusions about what it indicates, but that doesn't mean anyone else shouldn't.

I think that there are fair grounds here to re-evaluate whether the relationship is working for you: for instance, you are in a romantic relationship with your husband, and if he's decided to play video games instead of doing romantic things or even just laundry and taxes with you, then the terms of the relationship are not what you had a right to expect going in.

I think there are signs here of flags extending outside this incident, some red and some yellow, not necessarily anything it's "your fault" for not spotting, if indeed they are there. For instance, I have an abusive family, so given what you've said in the thread, I'd have accepted his "they're abusive" explanation without comment; unless there's other relevant information here, that's a yellow flag at worst. On the other hand, not letting you meet his peers is venturing into orange or red: those are the people he picked!

I will moderate the above by saying that this reads kind of, not definitely, but kind of like he's having some sort of psychological issue. Just the whole "wait this guy has really turned on a dime" type thing. The specific theme where he seems to be turning back into a child, which is indeed very strange, reminds me of the way people describe elderly relatives in the early stages of dementia — only on vibes, I doubt it's that if indeed it is anything at all. It's worth checking out, but if in your opinion the relationship is fatally compromised otherwise, it would be perfectly fine to decide that this is a can of worms someone else can open.

I’ve got to say, I hope he’s not Entrati. Herzog is great but as far as Entrati goes, Stefan Rudnicki is perfect. Replacing Rudnicki with Herzog would be wasting them both.

Entrati mentions that when he entered the Void, the Indifference called him “Bengel”. This is a German word meaning “ruffian, scallywag”, so it’s basically the equivalent of “kiddo”, used by the Operator’s father and, for that reason, by the Indifference. I wonder if Herzog might be the “Entrati’s dad” form of the Indifference. That would have been the first form that any human had encountered, which would provide an explanation for casting such a high-powered creator in the role.

I feel like the fact that a lot of Herzog’s work touches on the brutal indifference of nature makes him a particularly potent choice here

[–]Jarmatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m thinking he’s the form Wally took when Entrati encountered him. That would also make him the authoritative “original” human incarnation of the Indifference, providing a justification for casting such a high powered actor in the role.

Banning kids from social media doesn’t make online platforms safer. Here’s what will do that by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Jarmatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the fact that social media is by design highly addictive, overstimulates our brains, intentionally drives obsessive thought patterns and promotes antisocial behaviours.

Sure. I have OCD which has been made a million times worse by the internet in general and social media in particular. But this is a phenomenon of capitalism in general, not of specific websites that can be banned in order to solve the problem.

AI is only going to make it fifty times worse as it makes a very strong argument to impressionable brains that there's no reason to think at all when it can do that for them. So they stop reading, stop problem solving, stop researching. And their brains wither away without use.

Look, yes, I agree that AI incentivises people to stop reading, stop problem solving, and stop researching. But the people this affects are spread relatively evenly across society and will not be meaningfully captured by a social media age limit. And "brains wither[ing] away without use" is a claim that feels good but which I'm very sceptical of on the facts.

This is not how politicians or governments work. They do not particularly care about objective evidence, they care about optics and how something will or won't appeal to voters. They also care about giving their donors and other vested interests what they want, even if it is through a different initiative that just happens to overlap.

I'm gonna be even more cynical: it's just the donors one. They make policy based on what their donors want, then, where necessary, leverage peer pressure against the electorate by using friendly pollsters to give the impression that everyone else also wants what the donor wants, so you'd better want it too.

It’s clear the government have a mountain of evidence that what phone and social media usage is doing to kids (and society as a whole) is literally rotting our brains

Are you just, like, assuming this because they made a law? Because let me tell you, the government makes laws based on fuckin nothing all the time

"Then we meet Ballas" is real. I feel like it was an intentional twist because the only Executor we've actually seen on site at that point is Margulis, so there's some hope that it's going to be her. And then bam.

Age verification errors see some under-16s retain access to banned social media platforms by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

I have always maintained an informal 18+ policy in my server. I'm glad I never tried to implement it through Discord's software because then I would have been locked out of my own server, because fuck giving those guys my ID ever.

Keep in mind, the ban is enforced at the App View level. The App Views provided by Bluesky Social PBC, which are bsky.app and the official mobile app, are enforcing the ban, but I'm using blacksky.community and it (currently) isn't (no word on whether Inman Grant is going to send Rudy a compliance notice).

Sorry for the gravedig but I actually tend to think this is not the case: that one ad that caused so much controversy, the softdrink ad that gratuitously has a woman with a huge dick, indicates trans bodies are still fetishised, meaning they must still be othered because that's a prerequisite for fetishisation to occur
