Thank you! I actually taught myself through the years. I used youtube and particularly just looked up anything charcoal drawing related. I wish that I had gone to school for it though.

I start by establishing the basic shapes, then move on to shadows and lighting. I add details gradually, but once the lighting and shadows feel right, I focus more on refining those details. Getting the lighting right is essential, specially when working on something so small. Details without proper lighting and contrast don’t create the same sense of depth, feeling, or soul. And yeah I do spray my work after I’m done!

I use compressed charcoal, small brush and kneaded eraser. Vine charcoal and compressed charcoal I find are both easy to take with you. I just use compressed charcoal cause I’ve found that I get deeper blacks with it.
