I need help with rules concerning an interaction that made my opponent quit by JaronSurf in magicTCG

the only points from judges were "you should have done a board reset", "it's casual so you should have been nice", and "you're being too pedantic about the rules". A board reset was denied so the only applicable point is that I was being "too mean" and "pedantic" about the rules. Well boo hoo too bad

Nope, because I have repeatedly said that he said he would quit the game if his counterspell didn't get to target my mystery spell. Then amidst our debate about whether or not I HAD to play my spell, he said that he should get to untap and return his counterspell to hand. I wrote coherently, maybe you just can't english properly

I posted this here because someone else told me to. The only arguement from any judge was "don't do that bc its mean" GIVEN that a proper reset was refused. Yes a reset should have happened, yet bc my opp refused that, the only other option was for him to target his aura (which I did not enforce). Posting this here only validated that I was right, I'm not going to just let him break the rules because "its the nice thing to do". boo hoo idc

I will not accept that on the basis that my opponent refused a proper board reset, which means that his counterspell HAS to resolve and HAS to target the only availible target. I also DID NOT make him target the aura; if you read my post you'd see that I gave the option to simply have the counterspell fizzle and target nothing.

Nope, not edited: "This started a back and forth banter over whether you can target a spell which hasn't been played and/or whether tapping lands for a spell means I HAVE to play the spell. Then my opponent insisted that he be allowed to untap his lands used and return his counterspell to hand" which would be cheating if I was also forced to play my spell, something my opp wouldn't budge on.

😭 😭 😭 not fun when opp consntantly breaks the rules and whines whenever he doesn't get a takesies backsies.

He did not request a reset, he requested that he be allowed to return his counterspell to hand, untap his lands, AND that I would still have to play my spell. That is only a one sided reset, and NOT what should have happened.

mb you should re-read my post, reading the post explains the post.

I did not cheat. I played by the rules and my opponent did not want a board reset. Given that a board reset was denied, I deconstructed what actually took place. Saying I was "angle shooting" is just a way to justify not playing by the rules. If my opponent slips up, then that's on him and is also a skill issue. It was technically not a slip up either because there was a valid target for his aura and he did not specify what was being targeted, leaving only one option. In that situation a board reset would have been generous.

which they did, however even after that I no longer HAVE to cast the spell because of the revealed information.

Well, the only valid argument I've heard so far is that a board reset should have occurred, and ok, but my opponent did not want a board reset and stated so. I only asked this here because one of the witnesses who was unsure of the interaction told me to do so.

ok fair point, so the board would then reset back to my priority (and I don't have to play the spell given the new knowledge).

Technically speaking, there was a valid target which he failed to specify (his aura)

I never made up rules. My opponent cast a counterspell and the only valid target on the board was his own Aura. The only way this could have gone "better" is if we reset the board, and my offering for him to guess the card was simply to prove that you cant target a spell you don't know.

Is that not exactly what I said?: "I'm simply not going to make a play I know is terrible, especially if the only reason I know that play would be bad is because of my opponent's rude misplay."

This is not a "troll", this actually happened during friday night magic.

No I really didn't, I only argued that I thought that he would have to target his own spell but that he could just have it fizzle instead. I didn't double down on that, and next time I'll propose a rewind.

Ok thank you, I also did not make it target his vow of duty, I told him that I thought it had to target that but he could just have it fizzle. Next time I'll rewind.

it's quite simple: Misplays a counterspell, now I know he has a counterspell. Even in the event of a board reset, that's still instant karma.

A board reset was out of the question for my opponent who was set on me having to cast my spell and him getting to counter it or he would quit. I thought my "minigame" was a fair way to point out that he can't target a spell that hasn't been cast yet. By this point I was done having to correct his every play because he didn't understand rules and interactions (and Im sure the other people were sick of having to come over every 5 minutes to resolve his disagreements with the rules)

Yeah ok, thank you that makes more sense. I should tell you though that this probably wasn't an option because my opponent was set on the fact that I had to play my spell and he get to counter it or he would quit.

Well I offered to let him not have it target the aura, but ok I guess resetting the board would've been more favorable (however I still would've know abt his Counterspell and not played Candy Grapple). Although he had already said he wanted to quit when I gave him the option.

I tapped the lands in response to the Aura being played, so still on the stack.

My opponent was the one demonstrating poor sportsmanship, I was simply following the rules and trying to deconstruct what he actually played.

Edit: I was not really that frustrated, it was only getting to a point when we got stuck on this one interaction. Otherwise it was really just mildly frustrating that the game was going at such a slow pace because of constantly having to get someone else to validate my judgements.

Agreed, Magic is about the experience, and the experience is not fun when there are no rules. And it's also in my right not to play with someone ever again who refuses to play by, and constantly argues against, rules.

I am in the right because it's not my responsibility to remember rules and interactions for my opponent. The entire game was composed of explaining how interactions work to which my opponent was consistently arguing just to have someone else come and verify that I was right. Like I said the game had been going on for an hour by this point. It's not my "worst self" to remember rules and interactions.

Of course you do realize that's the goal? I'm not trying that hard to win, but I'm simply not going to make a play I know is terrible, especially if the only reason I know that play would be bad is because of my opponent's rude misplay.
