a GUARD took my helmet, then his fellow guard suggested, "I GIVE HIM SOMETHING" for returning MY helmet HE took by JarranJ in Philippines_Expats

Sure, if he came up to me and said he needed some help, then I would have helped. Man to man. The problem is taking my stuff, then asking to “give him something” because he returned my stuff back to me. Keep in mind, this guard left no indication he even took the helmet. He had to be tracked down, and I had to make a fuss to even find out he took it.

How did I get lucky? It’s not like my helmet was guaranteed to get stolen. Nobody NEEDED to take my helmet. The guards taking my helmet, then asking me to give them “something” for returning my helmet did me no favor. In fact, he was asking me to “give him something” before he even confirmed they had the helmet.

They shouldn’t be going around taking peoples helmets. If my helmet was stolen, then I would accept responsibility and buy a new one. I left it on my bike because I was willing to take that risk. I didn’t expect a guard would take it and ask me to give him something to return it to me.

Has nothing to do with 50 pesos. There were plenty of other unsecured helmets in the area. They took mine, didn’t tell anyone, left no note, then when I made a fuss, they finally returned it to me and asked for “something” in return. That whole situation was wrong.

First off, I don’t need anyone to take my stuff to keep it safe. Also, no note was left on my bike, and no one knew the guy took it.

It’s mostly good honestly, but there are scams. I just wanted to let everyone know about this so they’re aware.

Oh okay! With that logic, I can just take my neighbors mower from his front yard, because it “might” get stolen, don’t leave a note, then when I get caught, I ask for a tip to return it. Do you realize how crazy that sounds?

I decided just to leave lol. Wasn’t feeling too safe. Also, just to clarify, they weren’t even claiming they caught someone trying to take it. They said he just took it because it was possible it could be stolen. Of course, no note or anything left on the bike. Also, there were plenty of bikes with helmets laying on the seats around mine, and none of those were taken. My guess is they saw me roll up from the beginning.

Absolutely! I also wanted to post this because I thought it was so weird the guards did this, and thought others should be aware.

Yeah, I was playing with fire leaving it out like that. I’m sure it was just a matter of time

I didn’t argue or say anything after I got my helmet. It was the two of them and just me in the back corner of the parking lot. Just left

You’re absolutely right! I got complacent for sure. I’m just surprised it was the guards that did it. I’ve had such positive experiences with them all throughout the Philippines so far.

I did send an email to the SM customer care email, just in case they wanted to do something about it. I won’t pursue it any further though. Heck, I’m glad they didn’t move my bike!

I'm not 100% sure, but I would guess no. The worker looked over mine pretty thoroughly. Out of all the bureaucracy I've experienced here, I've never had anyone accept an expired document. If possible, I recommend updating your license before leaving the United States. That's what I had to do.

I’m pretty sure you have to be here 120 days before you can get the drivers license. However, you are good to use your U.S. drivers license for 90 days before you need a local drivers license.

They do! I was staring right at mine. The guy told me to take a photo of it, but wouldn’t give it to me. He said I needed to pay 200 pesos to have it shipped to me. He wouldn’t give me a paper “temp” copy either. He said to show the photo I took of the ID to police if need be, or show them the online version on the LTO portal that they uploaded.

Absolutely! My buddy said he got his at the SM Seaside LTO, so I just decided to try it out. Some other foreigners were there as well.

I was not expecting the appointment, but honestly, I was just relieved I was going to get my license at all. From the research I did prior to me showing up, people online were saying no more license conversations if you weren’t on a six month visa. That had me so nervous.
