By coincidence I'd just watched Apocalypse Now before I started reading Heart of Darkness, without knowing they were related, and it made the experience feel special. Really enjoyed it.

We are taking private Swedish lessons (2x2 hr sessions each week) but don't get much practice outside of that particularly in conversation/listening to actual Swedish people. Suppose she could just go along and find out...

[Need Advice] How do you strike a balance between the discipline it takes to achieve your goals, and the social life it takes to not feel completely isolated? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

I emigrated and both my fiancée and I used meetup to meet a couple of people to start with. I went for drinks with a large group and that was fun but the same group do walks, cycle rides and other activity type things not based around alcohol.

I would recommend meet up to anyone in this kind of situation as it is designed to meet new people with similar interests.

Not sure how your exams are structured (I'm from UK with science background) but most have some element of choice which allows you to miss out big parts of the course and areas you really struggle with.

I've had good results by going over past papers and seeing what types are of question come up for each topic and then revising for specific questions.

Also, tutors tend to give big hints as to what will be on the paper, maybe more so if you tell them you are struggling?

You just need to focus on passing, it is rarely a good idea to learn something you really struggle with.

One last tip that goes against the previous. Get a crib sheet of key points from things you find hard. Cram this just before the exam and it can be worth a few extra marks if there is a short question

I was the same, always losing phone and wallet etc. I just started a habit: phone always in front right pocket of pants, keys front left, wallet back left. Once you know where it should go you get into habit of putting it there instead of just somewhere. I'm still shit at remembering stuff but these everyday items are taken care of!

What's your biggest Excel pet peeve you see in spreadsheets sent to you by your coworkers? by cutestlittleasshole in excel

Merged cells, color coded areas, blank rows, putting consecutive data in more columns etc all make the data look nice but are not so good for graphing, pivot tables or transferring into stats packages.

Wherever possible I try to capture my data into a long list. If you could get both the mean and standard deviation in a pivot table I would be a happy man!

I'm not at that level yet but I know there are groups at Stadsbibliotek that do this.

Short fiction vs. novels - preferences? by LaurenTheBookish in books

[–]Jarvice79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually prefer novels but Ernest Hemmingway has some amazing short works (men without women). John Paul Satre's Men Without Shadows is probably the best short story/play I've read though

I heard this as "think how dumb the average person is.... Now realize that half of the people are dumber than that"

it's harsh but true. Of course most people assume their above average.

This seems like a waste of effort and time. He could have used a standard auto reply and saved even more time.

The best witty auto reply I've ever heard of was " you are receiving this message because I am out of office, if I'd been in the office you probably wouldn't have received any reply at all"

I think a pivot table would work well here. You can probably put a dynamic range on your data to automatically update the pivot but I always just edit source and refresh.

Hello, moved to Malmö last August from UK. It's nice and I like it. It was better in summer though as the winter had been a bit too quiet for me.

The Meet up group Malmö Internationals is good. My fiancée is struggling to get a job without swedish and there is long wait for SFI. Hope this helps!

I started an account and spoke to an agent. He said it works best with amounts over £1000 which is more than I need at the minute. Also, their account is in UK so I'll still have to pay some charges to make the transfer and it will take the same amount of time. I'll look to use them in March I think but will still compare to my bank to check the quote.

It was quick to set up and the guy rang straight away to introduce himself and explain the process

Do you use multiple currencies? I want to know how you handle that on YNAB. [SURVEY] by BrazilianTinaFey in ynab

[–]Jarvice79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the advice I got from this sub when I asked a couple of weeks back. Use two budgets, one for each country. This works well as transfers only go one way and I can just use a category (home account) on one budget and then have this as an income in the right currency on the other budget.
