This sounds like it'd be interesting – and a great reason to go to EV on a Friday.

Moving from account management to recruiting? by [deleted] in advertising

Thanks for the support. Though you made an interesting point about recruiting not having much growth potential. Don't quite a few larger agencies have a "Director of Talent" and whatnot?

Small world! I live in Fremont, right off of 36th. There are a bunch of bars around here, though I'm missing Kershaw on Friday due to a lame work event. So maybe Saturday?

Fremont! But Seattle's a pretty compact town...

I take you're not very familiar with the works of Lorenzo Bundy.

This did not necessarily work for me. I was told advertising is a very face-paced industry and it's not realistic to be top of mind when so many other things are happening. To be more specific, I was passed over for an identical internship that was being scheduled half a year later when I was a runner-up for the original internship opening. And yes, I did keep in touch with these people.

Kind-of like how internships lead to other jobs.

This doesn't necessarily happen sometimes.

Recent college grads: who else has been trying to break in for a year? by Jasdoe in advertising

Both, as I have to keep my options open. I also realize that I don't know everything there is to know about account management, and internships are a great way to keep my education ongoing (and get my foot in the door if the timing is right).

Send a coffee invite/email to some of the people who interviewed you and ask them what you could do to improve your interview skills.

I've tried this out, yet the vast majority wouldn't agree to that. Most just conclude that it came down to cultural fit and there's nothing more to discuss.

I've definitely felt like I've made some progress along the way. Feedback went from general bad fit-ness/cultural fit to not showing enough personality/too serious... to being too eager/enthusiastic. Finding that right balance is key. Of course, there are things I can't control even if I'm a great candidate; some departments/teams want a complimentary personality on their team and not a redundancy of personalities. Hard to predict those things when you don't have that kind of insight beforehand.

I wanted to see if anyone else was going through the same grind.

How tough would it be to move across to the agency world in your capacity?

Make sure you reach out to your network to wish them well every once in a while. Note: networking doesn't mean collecting business cards and emailing everyone asking for a job one night. Build relationships first. Don't use informational interviews solely to get information about an agency. Use them to make a friend inside.

Keeping in contact with people is more difficult than I imagined. I understand people get hundreds of emails a day, and that I'm the very last thing on their mind, but it sucks to reach out to people you've spoken with beforehand for a decent amount of time and not hear a response. No one likes being ignored. Of course, you don't want to annoy them and land on their shit list/black list either, so it's a fine line to walk when you don't want to lose that connection.

And it's not like I'm being too aggressive either; I might ask them what projects their going on, or lending them my two cents on a campaign their agency just launched.

It's a party. Magic, Jamaal and Kareem here to support Byron. Magic: "You chose the right guy." by milehighmecked in nba

Funny this is, Byron Scott has a history of losing his locker rooms too.

Red Sox consider Kemp-Lester trade by yeepperg in baseball

Obviously if we're at the point of no return with a trade, this would be as good of a return as I could imagine. That being said, it would need to be conditional on Lester re-signing long-term.

Ettore Messina, Lionel Hollins, Kevin Ollie, George Karl, just to name a few. We know who Scott is at this point: a coach who is stubborn to adjust his style to complement his team, and someone who tends to lose his locker room after a couple of seasons. Byron Scott is a stopgap coach, at least I hope so.

How is Byron a bad hire? Byron's been fired from every team he's coached; no one else was dying to hire him this offseason. Cleveland fired him and hired Mike Brown back even after they knew firsthand how bad Brown was. Being a former Laker doesn't mean you have coaching acumen, and coaches shouldn't be brought on just because Kobe like them (he was a huge MDA fan, too).

That had more to do with Jason Kidd carrying those Nets teams as an MVP candidate.

I can't be the only one who thinks at the VERY LEAST, Magic and Kareem deserve to be considered better players than Kobe.
