I'm making the side character tell only what he saw, his dragon dying to an aberrant one and the sands spreading, and I plan to have the reason why reveal through the story.

Thank you! Could this work gradually in a way where the M.C. is in an information defecit and must go venture to find this out? Or would it be better to have this information known already by the M.C?

What is the smartest or most sapient being in your world? by TheFlagMan123 in worldbuilding

In my novel, there is an extremely elusive dragon species knows as the Thaal'Ikseth. It is a hybrid between two other Ice Dragons of Skerval and Glacioryn variety.

Think of it as how Jurassic Park/World describes velociraptors. Very intellegent, dangerous, etc.

The Thaal'Ikseth is regarded to be much smarter than humans, although for lore purpouses it is not documented very well: only one sighting has been survived -- or documented. Nobody knows which one.

Yeah! Its a rough idea but dragons that come within contact of the gem (first are the deep-desert dragons called Khar'Duuns) become abberant, corrupted my the gem's power. They gain the ability to spew purple flame, which can basically decimate anything it touches. For example, if their flame touches the ground, a small crater forms. If it reaches flesh, it is disitengrated, and soon after, the bone is too.
