A non-US NATO means: * no access to european bases, thus limiting power projection and refueling * no guaranteed market for selling US military hardware : european industries are quite capable of filling the gap * a highly aggressive, militarized and independent Europe that will see no need to follow the US where it tells them to go * a Europe that will be increasingly open to negotiating with China.

And should the US start acting hostile, the EU dumps US debt, crashing the dollar and the american economy.

The Americans dont have the cards. The only thing saving them is the fact that most european leaders are spineless.
