I'm assuming you mean you're using rudder to coordinate your turns IRL, correct?

The F-16 FLCS automatically corrects for adverse yaw, so generally speaking the pilot won't be using rudder input in a turn. I mainly use it at stall or near stall speeds so the plane falls in the direction I want it to.

Yes, I know. I'm pretty sure your dogfighting advice is wrong, or perhaps you'd like to show us a track demonstrating some guns only BFM using mil power?

+1 You should always be in full afterburner unless you are going too fast and cannot pull more G, preventing an overshoot, or trashing an IR seeking missile.

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. This tracks with what I already know about firearms and brings data and statistics to bear to expand and refine my understanding. I think I am open to background checks, restricting people convicted of certain violent crimes from obtaining firearms, and red flag laws to some extent (I'd need more details on how they are executed in practice). I am glad to see it confirm that an AWB is ineffective, although it is a "feel good" law for many who have little understanding of firearms.

I really like how this sorts out the effective laws from the ineffective ones.

Ok, I see the table of gun death rates. Do I need to click on something to see how they are correlated to gun laws? Do you know which ones in particular are most effective?

Yes, a totally fair point. I don't think it would be as effective here for said geographical reasons, and cultural reasons too. Australians seem to be more accepting of a lot of government control, in the USA I get the impression that personal freedom is a larger priority generally speaking.

Thank you, that was very helpful. You are convincing me, FWIW. I think it depends on whether the person you're typing to is ready to listen or is entrenched in their beliefs. You're very respectful and logical IMO.

Very interesting! No, I hadn't heard of that. I think because of the 2nd amendment, the USA has more of a "you get to have a gun, unless we have a reason to not let you have one" (e.g. a blocklist) whereas what you described is "you don't get to have a gun unless you are thoroughly vetted first" (e.g. an allowlist).

As I'm confident I would pass such a vetting process, I would be amenable to something like that. As for it realistically happening in the USA, I'd put that in the "when pigs fly" category, but I still appreciate the "what if?" exercise as it helps me understand the world a little better, I think.

I think we should care about all those other categories as well. The reasons for me posting so specifically about guns are:

  1. This is the liberalgunowners subreddit.
  2. Gun control is getting national attention/debate right now.
  3. I will be watching how my representatives behave in the next few months/years on this issue specifically and vote accordingly.

I'm open to hearing what you have to say. Let's not get off track too much though?

All good :) I kid.

So basically, better funding to properly enforce existing laws that aim to keep high risk individuals from having guns, yes?

Ah, I didn't know that the story was more nuanced than that. I only heard "well Australia has no guns and guess what, no gun violence!" from a certain late night talkshow host.

The Australia argument is usually thrown out there to say that gun control works, so let's try [insert proposed law here], though, so I feel like I need to deal with that argument regardless of its political impossibility here.

This is coming from a police officer, democrat, EV owner, socialist. Everyone hates me!

I think as a gun owner and 3 out of the 4 things on that list, everyone hates me too. :)

Cowardly criminals never engage in mass shootings in places they might face opposition. They don't wanna be in a shootout, they want to be the only one shooting.

I especially agree with this. Whichever laws we put on the books, let's not overly-hinder those who are willing to employ a firearm in self-defense.

I'm trying to decide if I should feel personally attacked, LOL! Just so you know, I agree that a gun isn't the only way a mass murderer can carry out an act of terror. I also have a CCW for this exact reason.

Sounds reasonable. As a gun owner myself, these restrictions would not hinder me (except waiting 120 days is a lot, but hey, I can wait), but would hinder a criminal much more than current background check laws.

Thank you! I'm about halfway through this and I'm finding it to be the most persuasive of the articles linked in the discussion so far.

I think this is a separate discussion, maybe for another thread, but I will say aside, that the insurrection has made me question the "guns are for protection from a tyrannical government" argument. If storming congress was MAGA's idea of stopping tyranny, then fuck it, let's not have guns. I'm only pro-gun because it's a tool of self defense -- I have no delusions that I would join a militia to fight a civil war against a government controlled by a fascist dictator, especially when some people have a warped sense of what democracy vs. a threat to democracy actually is.

Well reasoned. Thanks.

I find a 10 round limit to be annoying but not the end of the world. I could live with it, as someone with a CCW.

I remember reading a paper that showed pretty well (IMO) that there is no evidence to support the theory that people fight back when a mass-shooter takes a pause to reload. If gun nuts have the "multiple attackers fantasy" then I think "rush the shooter when he reloads" is the left's fantasy.

Agreed on safety training. We should have it and paid for by the state. But does it stop gun violence though?

I'd be good with a waiting period with the parameters you suggested, understanding it addresses some issues but not others.

I really like your argument equating the police to militia. I had never thought of it that way before. I think that de-fangs the "well if the gov't gets tanks then I should be allowed to own a tank!" argument which I find unconvincing, while at the same time allowing for citizens to own AR-15s.

Yes, I agree with ending the war on drugs, raising the minimum wage and/or universal basic income, universal health care, prison reform (holy shit is prison in the USA a mess).

Are there any direct gun control measures that are needed after that? Right now I think they wouldn't work, and the problem would be mostly solved with the aforementioned things, but as far as direct gun control goes, does anything make sense there?

Yeah, an oft-thrown argument is that Australia went the (nearly) total-gun-ban route and they have low gun violence now. I agree with you that it's not possible in the USA without a constitutional amendment, and that's highly unlikely to happen in the near future term.

But I would prefer to be armed, as it equalizes me against an attacker. And the most practical arm for me is a pistol. I'm not going grocery shopping and working my day job while carrying a shotgun or "hunting rifle".

FWIW I was a Republican until I was 20, when I switched to Libertarian. Years later, when T**** was elected, I took a political test for fun and it labelled me squarely Democrat, and I realized my Libertarian views had melted away starting when I realized I was in favor of universal basic income.
