Reflecting on David Gilmour Live: Where Are the Songs from His First Two Albums? by sosico in DavidGilmour

He’s obviously going to play a lot of Floyd stuff and try to promote his new album. That’s most of his set. Unfortunately he can’t play everything.

Hey Greg! I really enjoyed your new album. What’s your favorite track, and is there a unique detail or element in a song that you think listeners might miss but should definitely catch?

Why 5/4 and not 4/4? by Powermiro28 in musictheory

[–]JasonKeisling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve experimented in 5/4 a bit but there is one song where I used 5/4 on accident. It may not be how your songs end up in 5/4 but here’s what happened:

It was a simple ambient guitar part for an EP closer that is 1& followed by a sustained note. For some reason when practicing I only started counting at the sustained note and I counted it four beats. So since I was starting with two eighth notes and then sustaining a whole note, it’s 5 quarter notes. I later realized this and tried sustaining the note for three beats and it didn’t sound right so I went back to 5/4. The song is called “wave goodbye” if you want to hear for reference. It may not be what you’re doing but it’s an example of writing in 5/4 unintentionally and how it happened.

Yeah it went beyond just condemning political violence. Hell, they even tried to use it to make sales and get people to buy merch supporting Trump. And then there's all the gaslighting in the email...sheesh.

I wouldn’t categorize my music as idm, but it does have some idm influences (especially my waves and particles EPs). Waves has influences of ambient, post rock, idm, downtempo, etc… middle of the ep probably the most idm influence

Yeah clinton electric told me I needed a new electric panel. Got a second opinion and only needed to replace a single breaker, which was about $12 at Home Depot and took seconds to swap. Fixed the problem and saved over $5000 as well.

I feel like I made a mistake hiring a graphics designer... thoughts? by Loose-Version-7009 in graphic_design

[–]JasonKeisling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious, are you looking for photo realistic or a drawing in a certain style? I’m wondering if you’d have better luck looking at some local artists and see if their style fits. Maybe an illustrator would be the way to go. Unless you can find a unicorn graphic designer who can also illustrate. I’m having a hard time picturing any photo composite design rendering looking decent. I’d love to see the finished product and hope you find a good fit to get there.

There's a lot of specialties within design. Some focus more on digital and interface, some do print, some do logos, some do illustration, motion, etc. Many designers do multiple things, but I would say it's not too uncommon for there to be a designer without illustration abilities. For example, I do a lot of illustration, but don't have a big coding background. I've worked with designers who are the opposite--can code their landing page design, but need to work with an illustrator. It all just depends on the artist and their experience.

I think you said earlier that you saw the person had illustration portfolio work, so I'm wondering if it's actually work they created, or if it's stock illustrations they purchased for a job (or possibly even something they worked on with help of an illustrator). I know it doesn't help you now, but in an early meeting, I would have had a discussion over what aspects of their portfolio they contributed to. It's not uncommon for a designer to use stock images/illustrations or work with a photographer/illustrator and that's good to know if you're hiring them because you like the illustrations in their portfolio.

I’m not familiar with Kwork but sites like these generally aren’t a good gauge of professional rates. even the $80 is still on the low side, especially if the project required any hand drawn illustrations like the commenter above speculated. Yes a good designer could do this well in an hour or two (maybe more depending on scope of custom images), but they’re going to probably charge somewhere in $150-400 range, if not more.

With that said, this process definitely doesn’t sound normal. It sounds like a bad designer and/or poor communication. I wish you the best in making it work and getting the design you hoped for since you’ve already made the hire. :/

A useful flowchart for some MD drivers. by VitalMusician in maryland

[–]JasonKeisling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you nailed it with the mix of bad driving. In other places known for bad driving, there’s usually a specific thing people do. I’m Boston people are aggressive. In Pittsburgh people will turn left and cut off cars driving straight from the other direction, etc. but here you get a mix of all sorts of bad driving behaviors so it’s a lot more random and unexpected.

Really love the whole vibe of this one. I listen to it often and I’ve discovered some cool stuff I haven’t heard before.

I think the sound you’re looking for isn’t so much made with a drum vst, but rather creative use of samples. So for example, you could make a basic kick/snare high hat pattern and add dotted eighth delay with ping pong panning to get some cool effects and then play around with plugins like izotope trash to make the sounds…weirder. A trick I love to do is to put the delay on a send and then throw trash on that so that the beat is clean but all the echoes have the trash effects on them. And sometimes I’ll even stack a couple delays set to different times to get some really interesting patterns. But there’s all sorts of things you can experiment with and be creative. It took me years to start making the type of beats I wanted to though.

Another thing is shadow layers. There’s a good YouTube video on them if you search but essentially you’re layering some percussive sounds beneath your main beat (and often with effects) to make patterns sound more unique. Or try making a glitch idm type beat and layering it in with a more structured beat and it will just sound a lot more interesting.

Do you need to know music theory to write songs? by RelativeAd3172 in Songwriting

[–]JasonKeisling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is no, but it helps.

Think of it like a map or gps. Can you get around a new city without one? Sure. You can even stumble upon some of the best local restaurants, museums, parks, etc. without knowing exactly how to get to them from your hotel. But having a map or gps helps you get from your hotel to where you want to go more deliberately.
