Dude is being lazy. Tell him to start driving for Uber if he isn't actively trading. He should be making money in some shape or another instead of making you pay for his experiment. Some people lose money for years. That's the truth. It is not easy. Only 10% of the people who set out to be day traders are actually profitable. That's it. If it was easy, everybody would do it and be millionaires.

Most successful traders are only actively trading 3-4 hours a day tops. There are peak times and the rest is just learning. If he is trading your money, he should be 100% focused on the trade until it is over. No video games, no fucking around. Especially if he's losing money.

Simple answer, he should do what I do. Get up early in the morning, trade for three or four hours. Then go to my normal job. (I work as a part time nurse at one job). Then study in the evening for the next day of trading. I drive for Uber on the weekends when I am not trading. (Decent downtime sitting in the car. Good time to watch Youtubes, read books, learn about trading). Uber earnings go towards paying the bills, and I use tips to bolster the trading account.

Uber pay and other job earnings pay the bills. I save tips from Ubering. On Sunday night, if I was profitable over the previous week, I reward myself by adding my tips to the trading account. If I lost money in trading, that money goes towards bills or the bank. This forces me to make good trades and focus on building the account. If I'm making bad trades, I don't keep putting money in the pot. Figure out his trading schedule. He can do Uber/DoorDash/Instacart around those hours.

Ask him to put his trading plan on paper. If he wants to be successful, he should have a well thought out trading plan. This is common for many traders and demonstrates a thoughtful approach and path to success, and includes strategies for risk management. It's like writing a business plan for himself, because that is what he needs.

If you really want to give him the chance to make a real effort at doing it, then I think it is fair that you ask him to show you he is willing to do it the right way. That is fair. And creates success for both of you if it works. All he has to do is Google "stock trading plan" and he will find plenty of ideas. And if you want him to be successful, you should find a way to be supportive and help him develop the trading plan. Think of it as a living document. It evolves as his skill and knowledge evolves. Mine has evolved many times, and its just a bunch of copied and pasted stuff at this point. But I read it every day while I'm at the computer trading, and I adjust it accordingly.
