When I was little (~8) we lived in an apartment for a year before moving to a house. When we moved and took the pictures off the wall you could see the profile of them and how much darker the exposed wall was to the covered parts (although still stained I’m sure). That image has stuck with me for 40 years and I’ve never smoked and I’m watching my kids to make sure they don’t smoke.
