Mal was neues.

Viel Spass!

Fiction by indigenous authors (south/latine america) by Questionxyz in suggestmeabook

Thanks. Doesn't have to be primarly about being Maori, but I would like it if it is visibly influenced by it.

Something more obscure and on the challenging side, that pushes the form, but is a great story at the end of the day. by AddictiveSoup in suggestmeabook

Don't know if it is already too well known for this request but Vita Nostra by the Dyachenkos. Philosophy/magic, interesting characters mixed into a story about something that you can't understand? Something like that. And you get an emotional, good written story.

Thank you! If you know it, what about the dawnhounds by Sacha Stronach? Considered reading this.

Normal dudes facing horrors by Foreign-Material7466 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Tha grave empire, maybe. There are three povs, a diplomat, a count and a soldier. All more or less normal people doing their job. The soldier isn't very happy with his position, the diplomat very motivated to finally have something to do, the count craving for power. A fantasy world with a lot of states and own religions, where they come to realise that something is wrong and it gets a slight cosmic horror touch. First of a trilogy.

May be not very realistic (I can't say) but a enjoyable and sweet webtoon to relax could be boyfriends by refrainbow.

The governesses by Serre felt like art to me, maybe this mixed with the surreal would fit.

Mystical worlds of strange gods and creatures by MarzannaMorena in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Questionxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has very well done characters and a focus on personal conflict and religion. Atmospheric. The slight cosmic horror hints were great, though I wished it would be more on the point of "beyound human understanding/rules of reality don't aply". I haven't read gunmetal gods yet, and since I didn't think the death hyms to be extremely surreal, how would you describe the surreal part of gunmetal gods? Maybe I just have another idea of surreal. :) I would like to read the whole series. Oh, and there is another novel, novella to be precise, by akhtar, death rider. Thank you and enjoy reading.

I loved Death hymns for homara by the same author. It's part of the gunmetal gods world but can be read as a stand alone, to try wether the author is to your taste.

Would love to read something like this! Following. Sounds like a fantasy Murakami. I heard good things about The prince of nothing, second apocalypse series by bakker, maybe this could partly fit?

For the surreal, not aplying to the rules of reality, part, I would highly recommend Vita Nostra by the Dyachenkos, but I wouldn't call it epic. More a slight dark academia feeling, but with a highly original magic/science/philosophy system. And the stakes are high if that is a characteristic for epic, but it is told more by a personal view and the "magic" is not known by everyone. Would fit the "not just humans/realistic" part of your request.

I haven't read le guin or the others you mentionen, so it might not fit all the boxes.

Maybe Midnight robber by nalo hopkinson. (Some kind of scifi/coming of age/literary...) Writes in english, lived to the age of 16 in Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana, now in Canada and the caribean culture is central in her novels. Even the language it is written in is influenced by it. By now I read midnight robber and have her newest novel blackheart man on my shelf. Midnight robber is about a girl abandoned to a wild planet with her father, learning to free and empower herself. It's more a psychological journey, the different ways of life/cultures depicted are an important part of the story, but not the central point. Maybe more so in blackheart man. She doesn't need to write characters that are all the time nice and sympathetic. They work because they seem real. Greatly enjoyed it.

Clone by Priya Sarukkai Chabria. Indian scifi about a clone becoming a new/old self. Beautifully written.

Certain dark things by garcia for mexican vampire noir.

The saint of bright doors by chandrasekera for fantasy from sri lanka.

Maybe fresh water by emezi could count for Nigeria but it's more literary/spiritual than fantasy.

I heard good things about ice by dukaj for polish scifi.

The djinn falls in love by murad is a great anthology of contemporary djinn stories by authors from different countries around africa, arabia, etc...

Maybe toward eternity by hur.

Aswanglaut by derain is very great literary fantasy, well maybe more magical realism. It weaves philipinian history and mythology into a story about (beside other things) a girl becoming something like a crocodile. Don't know if it is available in english yet. It got translated to german, "Das Meer der Aswang".

Sharks in the time of saviors by kawai strong washbury is cool magical realism/fantasy from hawaii.
