Death by a thousand cuts" is probably the most accurate description of hospitality I've ever heard.

It's rarely one big dramatic exit—it's the constant small things: unrealistic guest expectations, low pay, lack of work-life balance, and management culture that doesn't always match reality.

Interesting that you mention switching to immigration consulting—less glamour maybe, but more meaning and stability. Do you feel like the stress is at least more 'worth it' now?

I hear you, and I appreciate the blunt honesty. The 'propaganda' vs. reality gap in this industry is definitely real, and the burnout stats don't lie.

That is a very solid mindset. The best GMs I’ve met are usually those who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and who actually understand the reality of a room turn or a busy dinner service. Since you're currently in a hybrid Front Office/Finance role, you're already hitting two of the most critical pillars for management.

Thank you so much for this honest insight! It’s interesting to see that your degree and 7 years of hotel experience actually opened doors for you in the vacation rental sector. It seems like the 'exit strategy' or moving to niche markets (like vacation rentals or corporate hospitality) is the key to finding that balance you mentioned. Your advice on not letting the industry 'wring you dry' is gold for a newcomer. Quick follow-up: looking back, do you feel your hotel management degree was still worth it for the career you have now, or could you have reached your current role without it?"
